Paramus Police Officer Attacked By Suspect

Phillip Watson
On 1/27/2013 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Paramus Officer Joseph Cullen stopped a beige 2000 Chevy Malibu on Spring Valley Road in Paramus for a motor vehicle violation. While conducting the motor vehicle stop, Officer Cullen observed the passenger of the vehicle, pour some sort of a liquid out of a container on to the roadway. Officer Cullen detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. When the officer inquired as to what it was, the passenger denied pouring anything out. When the officer asked for identification, he reported that he did not have any, and said his name was “Steven Johnson”.

While conducting a computer check of both the driver and the passenger, the passenger exited the vehicle and ran from the scene. Officer Cullen gave chase on foot. The suspect ran through the residential back yards along Spring Valley Road and Prospect Street, where additional officers responded to assist with the apprehension. After fighting with the officers, the suspect was eventually handcuffed and secured by Officer Cullen with the assistance of Officer Dan DeRienzo and Officer Christopher Esposito.

Identification for the suspect was eventually located and revealed that he was 24 year old Phillip Watson out of Newnan Georgia. It was also revealed he had a “no-bail” warrant for his arrest for violation of his probation, out of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported to Paramus Police Headquarters where he was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and hindering apprehension. Bail was set at $15,000. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending court. The female driver , 38 year old Sherone Paisley of Paterson, was charged with several motor vehicle violations including driving with a suspended license. The vehicle was impounded from the scene.
