Buono Calls On Christie To Turn Down Invitation To Attend Gun Rally

“He needs to immediately renounce his support and decline their invitation”

New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono today called on Governor Christie to immediately decline the invitation to speak at a rally against reasonable reforms to reduce gun violence. Previous reports stated that the Governor would attend the rally on February 8 but today it was was reported that the Governor has still not made a decision on whether he will go.

"When it comes to common sense legislation to safeguard New Jersey families, Governor Christie is talking out of both sides of his mouth. In closed door meetings, he has promised to attend a rally organized by conservative activists whose extreme agenda is out of touch with most New Jerseyans. Yet in public, he refuses to confirm whether he will affirm their right wing agenda with his presence," said Buono.

"By even entertaining this invitation, the Governor is making it clear that he has no intention to take the steps necessary to reduce gun violence. It's time the Governor take on the gun lobbyists who are standing in the way of protecting our children and keeping our streets safe. While President Obama and Governor Cuomo have shown strong leadership on this issue, Governor Christie refuses to the right thing for New Jersey's families. The governor needs to understand that leaders lead all the time, not just when it serves their political ambition."

The group organizing the rally, the New Jersey Second Amendment Society, released the following video detailing the group’s agenda and encouraging people to sign up for the rally: http://www.youtube.com/user/nj2as.

According to conservativenewjersey.com:

“A couple hours before calling the NRA “reprehensible” at a Trenton press conference, Christie had met with about 100 conservative activists organized by Americans for Prosperity. The meeting took place at the State House. When asked by the activists if he supported the 2nd Amendment and gun rights, Christie warmly replied in the affirmative and even promised to come to a pro-2nd Amendment rally on February 8, if his schedule permits it.”
