Starting with Mingalaba, Charlotte Bennett Schoen stated that that was the only word that she knew how to say and its meaning when she sets forth on a two month journey to Burma now known as Myanmar. Bennett Schoen spoke to the Rotary Club on the National Day Of Burma 2/12/13. Of course she knew how to pronounce Aung San Suu Kyi, the name of the First Lady of Freedom in Burma and a Nobel Prize winner. Also in Kyi's resume is a US Congressional Gold Medal which had been awarded to her during her 15 or more years of house arrest. She also glowed over her newfound relationship with Sophie Stone, President-Elect of Paramus Sunrise Rotary.
Together, this dynamic duo has forged bonds over in Burma in advance of Schoen's venture overseas. Sophie has been educating Charlotte in the ways, culture and customs of the local Burma inhabitants. She even prepared a Burmese breakfast specialty mon-hin-ga (Burmese fish noodle soup)to give her compatriot a chance to see and taste Burmese dishes. They usually have a bit of spicy tang to them, ,but the Burmese are inured to that.
Schoen, heading the Peace and Conflict Resolution is involving Rotaract and Interact members here in the United States. She hopes to be able to connect with a group of students that Stone has met while visiting Burma last year and is in touch with via Skype. Charlotte also obtained a DVD that is movie theater quality and is researching a movie theater in which she could adequately display the movie. A trip to a local stationary chain enabled her to reproduce posters and a large size blow-up of Aung San Suu Kyi for the local student organizations.
Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club President Joe Castelano was so impressed with Charlotte Bennett Schoen's presentation and efforts that, in addition to the certificate that is given to guest speakers, he also gave her a Paramus Sunrise Rotary shirt that she could wear while on her overseas adventure.
