John Woods was a student at VA Tech during the terrible campus shooting there. His girlfriend Maxine and another friend were killed in the shooting. He is now an advocate against gun violence.
“When the shooter bought his gun, he lied on the background check form. The gun lobby had made it impossible to verify. That was the gun he used to shoot my friends,” John explains in the TV ad. “That’s why we need to prevent the wrong guns from getting in the wrong hands.” (Full transcript below.)
“Democracy for America released this TV ad right after the State of the Union to remind the President and Congress that speeches are not enough. We must act, and we must act boldly to prevent the next VA Tech or Newtown,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.
DFA fully supports universal background checks and a ban on high-capacity assault weapons as necessary steps to preventing massive gun violence. DFA will activate members around the country in key states and districts to ensure that any Senators or Representatives dragging their feet on this issue will be held accountable.
John Woods added in an interview about his story, “We can’t prevent 100% of tragedies, but it’s worth it to prevent the ones you can.”
