In case you missed it, today, on the eve of the anniversary of Governor Christie's veto of marriage equality, Garden State Equality endorsed Barbara Buono for governor of New Jersey. Check out the press release below, as well as some video highlights below.
“Now this group has been a strong advocate and you have been founded on the principles on the same promises that our nation was founded upon and that is the belief that regardless of who you are or where you come from or who you love, that we are all created equally.”
Steps Toward Progress
“The fact of the matter is, this younger generation is going to be growing up in a nation where they have no recollection of not ever having an African-American as President. And that is because of the people who got out there and fought for a cause. But you know these changes, these steps toward progress, they didn’t happen over night, did they? They didn’t happen because we willed them to occur. They happened because we worked toward them occurring. And they only occurred because people had the courage, the tenacity to stand up and fight for a cause. And that is what Garden State Equality is all about. You stood up and you’re fighting for a cause.”
Because You Fought For It
“And it is because you fought for it, that the state of New Jersey passed more LGBT civil rights legislation – 213 in less than a decade – more than any other state in the nation.
"And it’s because you fought for it, that New Jersey has the strongest anti-bullying law in the nation.
"And it’s because you fought for it, and continue to fight for it that marriage equality, the civil rights issue of our generation, is one step closer to becoming a reality.
"It is because of all you do and because you are not afraid to stand up simply for what’s right, that you have made New Jersey a better place to live.
"And so, like Garden State Equality, my campaign for governor will be a grassroots one and we will stand shoulder to shoulder and win in November. Because contrary to what some people say, money doesn’t vote in elections.
"The wealthy donors in California do not vote and cast a ballot in November. And we are going to stand shoulder to shoulder with the millions of New Jerseyans who care about New Jersey being a better place. We can be better and we can advance our principles, the principles that our founders of our nation relied upon and that is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that they should be there for everyone. And we will stand up and we will fight together in November and we will win. Thank you for this endorsement.”
