Hackensack University Medical Center Partners With Terracycle® To Recycle The Unrecyclable

Hospital Is First Official Medical Center Partner

Hackensack University Medical Center is the first hospital in the country to partner with recycling pioneer TerraCycle to keep difficult-to-recycle items such as keyboards and mice, diaper packaging, chip bags and writing utensils out of landfills. TerraCycle will recycle the items into affordable, eco-friendly consumer products and industrial applications.

Signing up for TerraCycle’s Brigade programs is just the latest step the hospital has taken to keep its commitment to the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to, among other things, reduce the use of plastics, reduce and recycle solid waste, prevent pollution of valuable natural resources, and conserve energy and water. Earlier this year, HackensackUMC eliminated the use of Styrofoam food ware campus-wide. HackensackUMC began its venture towards environmental sustainability more than 10 years ago with the help of Deirdre Imus through The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center™, beginning with the Greening The Cleaning® program in 2001, which promotes the use of nontoxic cleaning products and in 2005 with the design and construction of one of the first green hospitals in the country, which was named one of America’s Top Green Hospitals by National Geographic’s The Green Guide.

"We are honored to partner with Terracycle in innovative recycling initiatives at HackensackUMC,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and CEO of the Hackensack University Health Network. “By collecting chip bags and other high-volume waste in our cafeteria and break rooms, we are expanding what can be kept out of landfills, and helping Terracycle to ‘upcycle’ these items into a large variety of consumer products, contributing to a healthier world.”

Any medical facility, hospital, business, organization, family or individual can easily sign up to be a part of TerraCycle’s Brigade programs which provide recycling solutions for more than 50 waste streams and are sponsored by major brands like Frito-Lay, Huggies and Colgate. For each piece of product or packaging received, TerraCycle pays two cents to a charity of the collector’s choice. To date, TerraCycle has donated more than $7 million to charities and non-profits around the country and kept more than 2.4 billion pieces of waste from landfills.
