Statement by Kaytee Riek, campaign manager for SumOfUs.org on the latest Bangladeshi factory collapse that has killed over 100 people:
"Consumers around the world recognize that the blame for this tragedy lies squarely on global retailers like Gap and Walmart, which have actively obstructed the implementation of the life-saving Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Agreement. After the Tazreen factory fire in November, over 100,000 of us called on major brands to implement the agreement in order to prevent the next disaster. Now the next disaster has happened. As the death toll from these preventable accidents rises in the Bangladeshi garment industry, consumers are watching to see which brands refuse to take responsibility for their workers' safety, and we are prepared to hold them accountable."
