Buono: Supreme Court Decision on Voting Rights Act is a Grave Injustice

New Brunswick, NJ – Today, the Supreme Court invalidated key parts of the Voting Rights Act. In response, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and State Senator Barbara Buono issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a grave injustice, overturning one of the great achievements of the Civil Rights movement. The right to vote is a sacred part of our Democracy that millions of Americans have fought valiantly to expand and protect. The Voting Rights Act has played a central role ensuring that every American is able to cast a ballot. It’s inexplicable that the Court would turn its back on the great progress our country has made in recent decades. Our elected leaders have a responsibility to stand up against efforts to prevent voters from having their voices heard. While Governor Christie and his Republican allies are doing everything in their power to suppress voter turnout and limit voter access, I know that our country and our state must continue to build on recent progress. As Governor, I will work to establish New Jersey as a nationwide leader in holding free, fair and open elections.”
