Doherty Enterprises, Inc., is proud to announce it has been recognized by the Nation’s Restaurant News (NRN) as the 100th largest U.S. Food Service Company. The annual NRN Top 100 report is now in its 40th year. It ranks the largest restaurant chains and food service companies based on U.S. sales, unit counts, growth rates, market share and various other metrics. The industry-leading report has been used as a benchmarking tool for restaurants, suppliers, distributors and analysts to track brands, private-equity ownership and industry growth. Doherty Enterprises has also been recognized as the 70th largest privately-held business in the New York Metro area by Crain’s business. According to NRN, the report provides a detailed brand-by-brand assessment and three-year performance comparison of the largest individual organizations in food service. This year’s report gives readers a panoramic view of the market battles being waged for the hearts, minds and dining budgets of America’s consumers. A chain or company needs to generate at least $380 million in domestic sales in its latest year to be considered.
Edward M. Doherty, chairman and chief executive officer of Allendale-based Doherty Enterprises, Inc., began his company in 1985 when he acquired 19 Roy Rogers Restaurants. A graduate with a B.A. and M.B.A. of St. John’s University in Queens, NYC, Doherty rose through the ranks of Marriot Corporation gaining experience in real estate, marketing, franchising and operations management. In 1991, he repositioned his company and focused on other growth opportunities by developing additional concepts. He obtained franchise rights for Applebee’s® Neighborhood Bar and Grill and became a multi-year winner of Applebee’s Franchisee of the Year and Neighbor of the Year awards, sold Roy Rogers and TJ Cinnamon Bakeries he had acquired, and developed Chevy’s, Panera Bread Bakery Cafes. Doherty did not stop there – he opened original concept restaurants: The Shannon Rose Irish Pub and Spuntino Wine Bar & Italian Tapas. His next venture to open 20 Noodles and Company restaurants, in addition to one he just opened at the Gallery at Westbury Plaza on Long Island, is underway.
A family man, Ed and Joan Doherty’s children Tim, Shannon and Kerry, have followed their father into Doherty Enterprises and together they operate more than 140 restaurants, pubs and bakery cafes throughout the tri-state area with projected sales exceeding $315,000,000. Doherty is known as a visionary leader with heart-felt mission and respected community partner. He acknowledged, “Doherty Enterprises is honored to have been ranked as the 100th Largest U.S. Food Service Company by Nation’s Restaurant News – a publication that is highly regarded within our industry. We are firmly committed to our mission, which is to be the ‘Best Food Service Company in the Communities We Serve.’ Fortunately, we have seen steady growth despite a turbulent market and we strive to achieve on-going development daily.”
Not one to rest on his laurels, Doherty’s notable growth plans for 2013 - 14 are telling. It is clear the company’s recent acquisition of 38 Applebee’s in Florida and Georgia is about to significantly boost Doherty Enterprises ranking in NRN’s Top 100 for 2013. The new restaurants will help the company to achieve sales of close to $500 million. Doherty Enterprises plans to invest more than $10 million in remodeling the newly acquired restaurants. 2014 promises to be an exciting year with slated openings of a minimum of five new restaurants. Three additional Panera Bread Bakery Cafes will be welcomed group as well as an additional Spuntino and Quaker Steak and Lube.
More than the portions are giant - Doherty Enterprises, Inc., is currently the 10th largest franchisee in the United States; a number will be changing again in the very near future, operating seven restaurant concepts (Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar, Panera Bread, Chevys Fresh Mex, Quaker Steak and Lube, and Noodles & Co.) and two Doherty original concepts (The Shannon Rose Irish Pub and Spuntino Wine Bar and Italian Tapas). Doherty Enterprises, Inc., has been the recipient of a number of awards recognizing its contribution as a New Jersey-based parent company for job creation and tax revenue and its continued growth is certain. The restaurants have created business relationships with local food vendors, cleaning services, trash haulers, banks and maintenance companies who all benefit from their presence.
Doherty Enterprises, Inc. famed vision to be the “Best Food Service Company in the Communities We Serve” continues daily to inspire loyal diners with a world of choices in restaurants and the variety of food selections at the seven different restaurant concepts. Not only is there something to satisfy every palate, the service offered from the moment one walks into a Doherty Enterprises Inc., restaurant is clearly one of pride. Employees are trained to have the mission of “Wowing Every Guest Every Time, Wowing Our People, Wowing Our Communities and Wowing Our Suppliers,” and it truly has become more than just a mantra. Like a secret ingredient that makes you wonder what sets a dish apart from others, one can expect the level of service to be consistently amazing. Grandma may want to keep the ingredient to herself but Doherty is as generous with his secret as he is with servings. Doherty makes the investment in his team and growth speaks for itself.
Guests, servers and franchises alike all play a role in the expansion of Doherty Enterprises, Inc. Doherty fondness for the neighborhood appeal of the Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar restaurants holds a special place in his heart. He explained, “The neighborhood stories of great people and the fabulous deeds throughout all of our locations never fail to amaze me.” He was delighted to most recently open a “Noodles and Company.” He shared, “It is a pleasure to feature a collection of dishes from all around the world that provide healthy choices with a guest service team that is second to none.” Each one of the seven concepts has its own appeal for diners to discover.
Doherty Enterprises, Inc. is wholly committed to its surrounding community. In 2012 alone, it participated in more than 1,500 community activities, events and projects. Employees donated more than 2,000 hours of volunteer services and raised more than $900,000 in financial contributions, items, and services.
