Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono today toured a Tent City in Lakewood to talk to residents about the urgent need to revitalize New Jersey's economy.
“Residents of the tent city in Lakewood are strong-willed New Jerseyans who have fallen on hard times. They are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, people who worked hard for years in New Jersey and lost it all in the blink of an eye. Today I heard their hopes. I listened to their dreams. And I know that all they need is a chance to get back on their feet,” Senator Buono said. “They deserve a governor who understands that.”
As a candidate for Governor, Chris Christie visited a tent city in Camden where he pledged to rejuvenate New Jersey's cities and fight for all those struggling to make ends meet. However, while the gap between the rich and poor in New Jersey has continued to grow over the past three and a half years, Governor Christie has responded with merciless cuts, leaving New Jersey's most vulnerable residents without essential goods, services or opportunities to succeed.
"Lakewood's tent city is an example of the harrowing income inequality that currently exists in New Jersey and a reminder that too many New Jerseyans have been left behind by Governor Christie," Buono said. "In speaking with residents today, it's clear that we must do more to provide better employment and educational opportunities to create a New Jersey that works for everyone, not just a privileged few. As Governor, that's exactly what I'll do."
