Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono issued the following statement following a report that Governor Christie still has not read the Supreme Court's decision gutting the Voting Rights Act:
"After 65 days, it is astounding that Governor Christie has found the time to fly around the country to promote his Presidential ambitions and talk on sports radio for four hours, but still has not found the time to read a Supreme Court decision gutting one of the most important pieces of legislation to come out of the Civil Rights Era.
"The Governor recently declared, "If you ask me a question, I give an answer." Well, he has been directly asked about the Voting Rights Act decision five times and all we have heard is silence. Is he more afraid of afraid of offending conservatives in Texas and North Carolina, who are already restricting voting rights, than letting the public know his thoughts on this critical issue? From his deafening silence, we can only conclude that he agrees with the court's decision – and that is both appalling and tragic."
