Last week, Governor Christie energetically endorsed Mr. Lonegan and committed to campaigning for him throughout the fall. Yesterday, Mr. Lonegan made homophobic remarks that sounded as if they came from the 1950's. In response, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono released the following statement: "There is simply no place in our public discourse for Steve Lonegan's offensive remarks. Cory Booker has dedicated his career to standing up for all New Jerseyans, whether they are gay or straight, while Mr. Lonegan has repeatedly practiced the politics of division. "It is despicable that in 2013 he would claim that being gay means you cannot fit his outdated, 1950's era definition of manliness. True courage is having the integrity to stand up for those who have not yet achieved full equality.
"New Jersey is a diverse state and will not tolerate this type of bigotry. Governor Christie should immediately denounce these comments and rescind his endorsement to reiterate that he will not tolerate it either."
