Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono released the following statement denouncing racist remarks directed at Nina Davuluri, the first Miss America pageant winner of Indian descent:
“I was deeply offended by the hateful and racist online comments regarding Nina Davuluri winning Miss America 2014. There is no place for such bigotry and intolerance in our discourse.
“Indian-Americans have contributed much to the United States in business, academia, science, the arts, and athletics. What Ms. Davuluri has accomplished is another addition to a long list of achievements for Americans of Indian descent.
“Having the first Indian-American Miss America be crowned here in Atlantic City is a point of pride for the state of New Jersey, where we embrace the great diversity that defines this nation. Ms. Davuluri’s recent achievement is reflective of her great poise and brilliance, and I commend her commitment to ‘rise above’ this narrow-mindedness.
“I would hope that others follow her example.”
