Through his own efforts, Michael raised $600, which was used to purchase 30 copies of the book, “Understanding Diabetes: A handbook for people who are living with diabetes,” 12th Edition by H. Peter Chase, M.D. and David M. Maahs, M.D., Ph.D. The books will be distributed free of charge to all newly diagnosed pediatric patients of the MOLLY Center.
“Michael’s efforts to help educate children about diabetes are very commendable,” said Javier Aisenberg, M.D., medical director, MOLLY Center for Children with Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at HackensackUMC. “In fact, his efforts have spurred other people to contribute to this cause, which will help us purchase additional books and will greatly benefit our patients.”
This is an extremely important issue to Michael because he recently lost his grandfather to diabetes.
“This project success is not determined by the amount of money I raised for my benefitting organization, but it is judged by how many people received my message,” said Michael Giampiccolo, Boy Scout troop 73, Haworth, New Jersey. “If just one child, like me, makes good choices in their eating and living habits today, that will positively impact their future and help prevent the spread of this horrible disease.”
The Endocrinology and Diabetes Program at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital provides long-term care for children and teens with diabetes and other endocrine system disorders. The program’s goal is to provide the best care possible for children, while helping caregivers understand and manage their child’s condition. The team includes board certified pediatric endocrinologists, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, certified diabetes educators, registered dietitians and licensed clinical social workers.
