- Buono campaign chair Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman released the following statement in response to the gubernatorial debate held tonight at William Paterson University:
“Tonight's debate was a home run for Senator Buono. She articulated a clear, positive message of lifting up the middle class and strengthening New Jersey's economy. Her commitment to raising the minimum wage, restoring the Earned Income Tax Credit and investing in our schools will ensure our economy works for all residents, not just a select few.
"The contrast could not be more clear: Senator Buono will work every day to do what's right for New Jersey; Chris Christie will work every day do what's necessary to advance his national ambitions.
"Make no mistake about it – Governor Christie came into tonight's debate with an impossible task: defending his atrocious economic record. But instead of talking to voters about his ineffective trickle-down economic policies, Governor Christie sprinted away from any mention of them.
"It's easy to see why Governor Christie would run for the hills. Middle and working class New Jerseyans are in far worse shape today than they were four years ago. There are 400,000 residents out of work, property taxes are skyrocketing, the poverty rate is at its highest level in 52 years and New Jersey has one of the lowest rates of job creation in the United States. All the while, Governor Christie has protected the rich at every turn at the expense of our workers and families.
"Governor Christie's economic record is unacceptable and indefensible. Senator Buono is the leader we need to move New Jersey forward.”
