Nepresso And illy Let Consumers "Recycle At Retail"

NESPRESSO AND ILLY LET CONSUMERS “RECYCLE AT RETAIL”
Consumers Now Have A Way to Keep Coffee Capsules Out of Landfills

TRENTON, N.J., – Coffee drinkers with single-serve Nespresso or illy iperEspresso machines now have a way to keep their used coffee capsules out of the local landfill. Sur La Table stores nationwide have recycling receptacles for both brands, while Williams-Sonoma accepts Nespresso at select locations. All capsules are sent to recycling pioneer TerraCycle where the leftover coffee inside the capsules will be sent to an industrial composting facility while the actual packaging from the capsule will be recycled into a variety of new products.

With estimates showing that almost 5 billion coffee capsules are sold every year in the United States alone, this relatively new method of coffee brewing has become a permanent part of the industry landscape.
“Since curbside recycling is not an option for the capsules, it is great that illy and Nespresso have worked with their key retail accounts to give consumers a way to recycle the used capsules where they purchase new ones,” said TerraCycle CEO Tom Szaky. “It’s extremely important to consider the environmental impact of our daily coffee habits and make a difference where you can.”

Further evidence suggests that consumer preference for single-serve coffee will only continue to grow. According to the NPD Group, during 2012, 46% of the dollars spent on coffee or espresso machines went to single-serve systems.
In addition to the retail recycling option, Nespresso consumers can send their used capsules directly to TerraCycle by joining the Nespresso Brigade on www.terracycle.com. Illy consumers can recycle directly through illy by using the pre-paid return shipping label provided to them when their capsule orders are shipped out.

About illy
Based in Trieste, Italy, illycaffé produces and markets a unique blend of coffee under a single brand. Illy buys green Arabica coffee of the highest quality directly from the growers through partnerships based on the mutual creation of value. Illy considers respect for the environment and people that nurture coffee a fundamental part of doing business -- in evidence every day for 20 years across Central America, South America, India and Africa. It is expressed through Università del Caffè ("University of Coffee") which provides hands-on instruction at no cost to coffee growers who meet its quality standards. And it is recognized by independent arbiters like DNV (Det Norske Veritas), which in 2011 conferred its first-ever global Responsible Supply Chain Process Certification to illy in recognition of sustainability in every aspect of its coffee sourcing, particularly the ethical, long-term direct relationships with coffee growers. In 2013, the Ethisphere Institute honored illy as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. More than six million cups of illy coffee are enjoyed every day in more than140 countries.
