By Mel Fabrikant Wednesday, October 23, 2013, 03:55 PM EDT
Mayor Rich LaBarbiera made three separate Commendations to three Girl Scouts who had received the Girl Scout Gold Award by having done some important duty. They were Erica DePasquale, Christine Muller and the third to Arianne whose last name escapes me. This is a prestigious award and LaBarbiera stated how proud he was of these achievers. In other news, Past Mayor James (Jim) J. Tedesco and DPW Director Guy Picone stood before the assemblage and described the Ordinance on Final concerning the acquisition of trailer mounted generators by the Borough.
Tedesco, a retired senior executive from PSE & G worked with the Borough to assess the needs and requirements for auxiliary power during emergencies like Hurricane Sandy. Residents may not know it, but Jim was recruited during that catastrophe to help getting power back. He worked endless hours, missing important political functions putting the needs of the Paramus population first! One of the first things that he did was to make sure that the senior residences in town got their power restored.
He explained that portable power was selected to purchase for several reasons. To start with, Paramus had to be self-sufficient and not have to rely upon outside sources for assistance. He described the needs according to priority e.g. the Borough Hall, the Police station, the OEM building and the Fire Houses and EMS as targets of his probe. The OEM building would be made available to residents to power up their electronic devices and to keep warm, but not to stay overnight. Portability was the key to ensuring that power could be brought to the most needed places should their generators fail. The final ordinance was passed unanimously!
Councilwoman Bellinger, in her reports, mentioned that Detective Jimmy Teehan was back in the schools. He had been pulled from that for budget reasons. The Recreation Commission is now on Facebook as are several other departments such as the Police and the DPW. A pumpkin hunt for our little pumpkins (children) will be held this Sunday. Councilwoman Warburton mentioned that there would be a Veterans Celebration at West Brook school and on November 11th at the Veterans site at Memorial School. Veteran Service Officer Sam Casiello will be in charge. Safe Halloween will be observed for the kids at the Rescue Squad, Firehouse 2 and Firehouse 3 on October 31 starting after 5 PM.
The meeting started near to the scheduled time at 8:11 and ended at 9:12PM.
