“Light and Human Health”
By Mel Fabrikant Monday, October 28, 2013, 04:46 PM EDT
Presented by Dr. George C. Brainard, Ph.D. Department of Neurology, Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA
Light is a potent stimulus for regulating human biology and behavior.
Light has the capacity to restore health in clinical applications, such as treating winter depression and sleep disorders.
In addition, light therapy has been evaluated for healthy individuals who experience circadian and sleep disruption associated with intercontinental jet travel, shift work and spaceflight.
Studies are in process testing a prototype solid state light system for supporting astronaut vision as well as circadian, neuroendocrine, neurobehavioral and sleep regulation in crewmembers on the International Space Station.
Development of such advanced lighting technologies opens the door to innovative architectural applications in public facilities, work places and homes.
Dr. George Brainard joined the Jefferson faculty in 1984. Respected in the Jefferson community as an extraordinarily gifted teacher, Bud has taught neuroanatomy and neuro-physiology to more than 5,000 medical and graduate students.
His academic work is specialized in the area of pineal gland physiology and the effects of light on humans. His research has been supported by grants from the FDA, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Energy and many others.
Dr. Brainard is currently funded by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, which is supported by NASA, to develop lighting for manned, long-duration space missions. He presently serves as Associate Academic Director of the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine, and he is an honorary lifetime member of the Yoga Research Society.
