On Thursday, October 31, 2013 at approximately 12:43 pm, Police Officer Keith Bland was on patrol in the area of Lord and Taylor in the Garden State Plaza when he was advised of a credit card fraud occurring inside of the Lord and Taylor store. The suspect exited the mall near JC Penney. At that time Bland approached the suspect later identified as Jamaal Freeman in the parking lot. Freeman immediately pushed pass the officer and fled on foot, west across the parking lot.
Freeman then entered a 2013 Nisan Altima, color silver, with North Carolina license plates. As Bland caught up to the vehicle the suspect deliberately pulled out of the parking stall and headed toward the officer in order to hit him with the car. Officer Bland was able to get out of the way and the suspect fled west towards Paramus Road. By this time other Paramus police cars had come to assist Bland. They pursued the vehicle south on Paramus Road then east on Passaic Street. The suspect vehicle made a left turn down Roosevelt Street in Rochelle Park which is a dead end. Freeman attempted to drive his vehicle around a home at the end of the street but was unable to. At this point he abandoned the vehicle and began running over fences and through backyards located in Rochelle Park. With the assistance of other Paramus Officers and Police Officers from the Rochelle Park Police Department, Freeman was apprehended several blocks east of where he had bailed out of the car.
Jamaal Freeman was transported to Paramus Police Headquarters where he was booked and then remanded to Bergen County Jail on $50,000.00 bail. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Jamaal Freeman was arrested and charged on October 31, 2103 with:
Aggravated Assault 2C:12-1B
Resisting Arrest 2C:29-2
Fraud Use of Credit Card 2C:21-6
