Paramus Police Apprehend Two On Assault and Credit Card Fraud

The Paramus Police Department announces the arrests of Nelson Rodriguez, 41 yoa, of Bronx, NY and Rafael Batista, 41 yoa, of Bronx, NY, for robbery, assault on a police officer and credit card fraud. On Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at approximately 5:40 pm the Paramus Police Department received information that 2 suspects were at the Best Buy store, located at the Garden State Plaza Shopping Center, attempting to purchase $4000.00 worth of IPad Airs and video games with several credit card accounts that were reported stolen.

Police Officers Mike Ditolla and Daniel Derienzo who were assigned to the Paramus Police Anti Crime Unit observed the suspects exit the store and enter a 1999 Dodge Stratus, color purple, with New York license plates. Officer Derienzo approached the driver side of the vehicle and identified himself as a police officer. At that time the car driven by Nelson Rodriquez took off at a high rate of speed and struck Derienzo on his left arm. The suspect vehicle then rammed Ditolla’s police car which had pulled into the parking aisle to stop their flight. The suspect’s vehicle attempted to flee the lot however they made a wrong turn down a dead-end aisle next to the Best Buy. At that time the suspects became trapped and were then taken into custody by Ditolla, Officer Anthony Modaga and Officer David Beta

They were transported to the Paramus Police stationhouse where they were charged, booked and then transported to Bergen County Jail. Rodriquez’s bail was set at $50,000.00 and Batista’s was set at $35,000.00. Officer Derienzo was transported to a local medical center where he was treated and released for bruises and cuts. The defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The suspects were arrested and charged on December 10, 2013 with the following:

Nelson Rodriguez Robbery 2C: 15-1
Aggravated Assault on Police Officer 2C: 12-1
Eluding Police 2C: 29-2B

Rafael Batista Robbery 2C: 15-1
Fraud Use Of Credit Cards 2C: 21-6
Possession stolen Credit Cards 2C: 21-6
