Shovel Ready by Adam Sternberg is a combination of Stephen King, Jack Webb's Sgt. Friday and the gaming novel Ready Player One. If you are an aficionado of the above, you'll love this book. I am none of them, but I couldn't put the book down. I read it from start to finish.
Dealing with a futuristic metropolitan New York city, Sternberg unravels a tale about a devestated New York, barren of all normal activity as we in the 21st century know it. His characters vary from somewhat normal to those living in a stratified air. Combining magic along with a touch of sanity seems to be his forte.
Although a little bit difficult to follow at times, his protagonist, Spademan, seems able to exist in both worlds. Spademan is a killer with ethics. He doesn't kill children! He does it kill pregnant women! He will kill anyone else!
Hired to kill a runaway young women, normally an easy task, sends him along a precipitous path. Enrojute he disposes of a few bodies and locates his prey only to discover that she is pregnant. His decision to abort his mission results in his fighting for his life as well as that of his previously intended victim.
Shovel Ready will prove an interesting read. Published by the Crown division of Random, House, it will be available on January 14, 2014.
