Paramus Police Pursue Their Leads: Result - An Arrest With More To Come

Paramus Police The Paramus Police Department announces the arrest of George Mihalakis, 35 yoa, of Ridgefield, NJ and the filing of criminal charges against Maria-Eleni Eleftheriadou, 23 yoa, of Haravi Corfu, Greece for the filing of a false police report.

These charges are the result of an extensive investigation, by Paramus detectives with the assistance of detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutors Office into the reported shooting of Maria-Eleni Eleftheriadou at the Westfield Garden State Plaza Shopping Center on December 31, 2013. Detectives had worked throughout New Years Eve and New Year’s day collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Numerous inconsistencies began to develop in the case between the report and the evidence collected.

On January 2, 2014, Detectives returned to a Ridgefield location for a prescheduled follow up interview with the victim. Eleftheriadou along with her fiancé, who is also a citizen of Greece, and George Mihalakis were staying at this address. At this time Mihalakis reported that Eleftheriadou and her fiancé had fled to Greece on an overnight flight. Police confirmed this story with Customs Officials. As police continued to investigate they were able to determine that Eleftheriadou had been shot in the chest by a small caliber firearm but that the shooting had occurred in location other than Westfield Garden State and the Borough of Paramus. Detectives are continuing to investigate who was responsible for the shooting and where the incident actually occurred. Mihalakis was charged and released without bail pending an initial court date. Upon her return to the United States, Eleftheriadou will be served with her criminal complaints. Complaints against Eleftheriadou’s fiancé are pending. Police ask anyone with additional information to contact the Paramus Police Department at 201-262-3400 extension 553.

The suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Both subjects were charged on January 2, 2014 with:
Filing a False Police Report 2C: 28-4B(1)
