Nearly two dozen states will participate in activities aimed at fighting ALEC’s right-wing agenda
Fighting back against the extreme right-wing, anti-working family agenda of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a coalition of national groups led by ProgressNow will launch a day of action tomororw, Tuesday, January 21st, aimed at exposing the out-of-touch ALEC agenda.
“Across the country we have seen efforts by ALEC to take over our statehouses and put profits over people, and now it’s time that the people stood up and fought back,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of ProgressNow. “These actions will not only help expose ALEC’s secret agenda, but empower Americans to reclaim their voice in state capitals nationwide.”
Tuesday’s National Day of Action comes in the wake of documents released by The Guardian last month which show ALEC has lost significant corporate and state legislative support in the last year, causing a major financial shortfall and formation of a new 501(c)(4) organization to shield itself from legal complaints to the IRS.
Actions will range from legislative hearings aimed at investigating state funding of ALEC activities to asking legislators to sign a pledge putting their constituents before the corporations that ALEC represents.
In addition to the National Day of Action, organizations will participate in a weekly program entitled, ‘Mondays with ALEC’ beginning January 27, which will highlight the damage ALEC legislation and legislators have done to working people on issues ranging from health care and education to voting rights and the environment.
