Kings Food Markets + Forecasting Food Trends Of 2014

It is a New Year. A time to set new goals, look for new opportunities and take notice of new trends. Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert recently shared with Supermarket News his 2014 food trend prediction list spotlighting healthy snack options; the rise of international foods being cooked at home; and the “community cooking centers” where shoppers can collaborate and learn from each other.

Kings Food Markets is ahead of these trends, offering selections of healthy snacks throughout its stores, a variety of international cuisine options and a selection of cooking classes showing shoppers how to prepare meals. So, this year, Kings has identified the top trends it sees specific to its shoppers in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, including:
• Super Food Craze
o Cauliflower is being used by consumers in a number of ways this year. From traditional dishes to unique recipes, Kings shoppers, specifically, are taking advantage of its multi-color varieties with decorative platters, innovative mashed options and with the popular kamut grain – in a Coronation Cauliflower Salad with mild curry dressing.
o Kale continues to be a big trend this year as it can be served in many forms – from chips and soup to side dishes on its own. Low in calories, high in fiber and zero fat, Kings offers various options of kale: Brad’s Leafy Kale, Woodstock Farms Chopped Kale and Earth Bound Organic Kale.
o Feeling inspired by these trends, Kings chefs even created a Super Food Salad incorporating all of the super food trends, made up of crisp baby kale, blueberries, dried cranberries, carrots and sunflower seeds, combined with a Pomegranate dressing to round out what is truly an incredible flavor treat and an antioxidant powerhouse. Shoppers can easily pick up the Super Food Salad in the prepared food section.

• The Juicing Phenomenon
o Organic fruits and vegetables remain popular ingredients for traditional juicing this year. Kings carries not only the freshest but also the largest variety of products in its communities, allowing customers to try unique smoothies, such as Winter Greens and Almond.

• Old World Inspirations
o Mezze is here to stay.
