The First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford would like to invite you to attend an organ recital by internationally acclaimed organist, Jon Gillock, at 3:00 pm on Sunday, January 26, 2014. This is the second recital celebrating the restoration of our 3-manual Möller pipe organ, and the second concert supported by the Karen Kaiser Memorial Concert Fund.
It will be a thrilling program, both introspective and expressive, with music reflecting the theme, "The Great Modern French Mystics: A Program of Meditation, Contemplation, and Exaltation." The program includes some of the best known and most accessible pieces of great French organ composers.
Chorale No. 3 in A minor ~ César Franck
Cortège and Litany ~ Marcel Dupré
Cantabile ~ César Franck
Improvisation on the "Te Deum" ~ Charles Tournemire
Romance from Symphony No. 4 ~ Louis Vierne
Carillon de Westminster ~ Louis Vierne
La Nativité du Seigneur (The Birth of the Lord) ~ Olivier Messiaen
III. Desseins éternels (Eternal Purposes)
IX. Dieu parmi nous (God Among Us)
Dr. Gillock especially enjoys performing French music and is a noted performer, interpreter and teacher of the organ works of Messiaen. Messiaen's widow, Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen, wrote about Jon Gillock: "When Jon Gillock performed Messiaen's works at St. John the Divine in New York, his personality, his virtuosity, his registrations, his knowledge of sonority, and the faithfulness of his interpretation overwhelmed the Composer." He received rave reviews when he performed Messiaen's music at the Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative in September. On February 4, he will play a recital of Messiaen's music at Church of the Ascension in New York City, where he will also continue a recording project of the complete organ works of Messiaen.
It is a special opportunity to have Dr. Gillock with us for this program, bringing warmth and beauty into a cold season. The event is free, with freewill donations to support this and future events. All are invited to enjoy the music and the reception following. Please help to publicize the recital. You may download the flyer attached and find more information about Jon Gillock at www.jongillock.com.
