Caring for an aging loved one presents a unique set of challenges when confronted with winter’s freezing temperatures, slippery snowfall and dangerous road conditions. The Emergency Respite and Short-Term Stay Program at The Atrium at The Allendale Community for Mature Living is a viable option to ensure the safety of older adults during severe weather events and other natural disasters.
Superstorm Sandy made caregivers across the country acutely aware of the need to be prepared for emergency situations. The Atrium’s short-term respite care services are particularly valuable when weather conditions are expected to knock out heat, power and telephone communications, and heavy snowfall impedes traffic, making it difficult to reach a senior in need.
“Any severe weather event can pose dangers to seniors, especially those living alone,” said Dr. Timothy Giancarlo, president of The Allendale Community. “Although our respite program was designed to offer full-time caregivers the opportunity to take a vacation or travel for business, the service also is helpful before, during or after an emergency affecting the senior’s home environment, such as an extreme weather event.”
During a respite stay, seniors are given all the same amenities and care as permanent residents, including meals, medication management and access to a range of social activities. Guests benefit from a safe, supportive environment that includes daily social, educational and cultural programs; restaurant-style dining; and flexible healthcare and wellness options if needed.
Services include assistance with daily tasks such as dressing and bathing, and wellness assessments. Therapeutic treatments, such as occupational, physical and speech therapy, also can be administered by professionals associated with The Allendale Community’s on-site Rehabilitation Center.
The Atrium’s diverse array of programs encourages residents and short-term stay guests to rekindle their interest in former hobbies or pursue new interests. The building has an on-site cinema, a game room, an arcade, an Internet Café, a library, an exercise room, an activities center, a 1950s-style diner and an outdoor courtyard with putting green.
“Although the arrangement is temporary, many of our short-term residents decide to become full-time residents of The Atrium because they have forged new friendships or rekindled old ones,” Giancarlo said. “For adults who have been reluctant to make the move to senior housing, respite care is a great way to increase their comfort level through a first-hand, trial experience.”
Each apartment at The Atrium features a spacious living area and closet space as well as a private bathroom. Apartments also are equipped with 24-hour emergency response systems and are in close proximity to a health station, staffed by certified nursing assistants with registered nurse supervision.
