The Mongolian BBQ Experience At The Magic Grill

Long a favorite of the family, we ventured to the Magic Grill in Garwood, NJ to experience epicurean delights. Run by owner Susan Wei and her sister, Mary Wei, it introduces one to the delights of having the food that you select cooked right in front of you. The food that you choose can be beef, chicken and/or pork combined with a huge variety of vegetables and noodles. Instructions for the neophyte are posted over each section telling you how to fill your plate and the sauces , oil and wine that can be added.
Locals may remember a similar restaurant that was present in the Bergen Mall, now known as the Bergen Town Center. Mary Wei operated that for many years before closing and taking up supervision of the Garwood location. The Bergen Mall location had the circular grill in the back thus diminishing the allure of everyone being able to see the chefs as they circle around the cooking surface adding liquid when needed to keep the dish tasty.
We started out the meal with some steamed rice patties followed by soup de choice ... egg drop, sweet and sour and wonton. From there we went to the food selection area, took a large deep bowl and began to fill it with our individual choices. This was followed by the sauce, wine and oil. One could even add some ginger water before turning the dish over to the master chefs. Within a few minutes, the food was cooked before our eyes with the chefs circling around the metal cooking area moving the food with long and thin spatulas.
Back to the table we went and enjoyed our food under the watchful eye of Mary who made sure that everyone was satisfied. We were!
Magic Grill, located at 104 North Avenue in Garwood, 908 789 2110 is open seven days a week with hours usually ranging from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM and varying on the weekend.
