Paramus Police Avert Another Mall Incident

The Paramus Police Department announces the arrest of Devin Rivera, 18 yoa, of Clifton NJ for the possession of an imitation firearm for an unlawful purpose.
On January 31, 2014, at approximately 8:31 pm the Paramus Police Department received a call reporting a male located in the Westfield Garden State Plaza food court brandishing a black semi-automatic handgun. Several minutes later, Paramus Police Officer David Betancourt observed the male walking on the lower level of the shopping center towards Macys.
Betancourt stopped the male and observed what appeared to be a the weapon stuffed in the actors pants waistband. Betancourt who was immediately backed up by other officers, took possession of the weapon which turned out to be a realistic appearing BB handgun. At the time of the arrest Officer Betancourt was assigned as part of a mall safety unit that is subsidized by Westfield Garden State Plaza.
Rivera was arrested without incident and was transported to Paramus Police Headquarters where he was charged then released on his own recognizance.
The actor stated that he was only carrying the weapon because he was afraid of other individuals who might also be at the shopping center. The suspect is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
