HackensackUMC Becomes First Air Medical Unit with Onboard LUCAS™ Chest Compression System

We are incredibly grateful to Joe Sanzari for enabling our HackensackUMC team to have this lifesaving equipment,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of Hackensack University Health Network. “Every second counts in an emergency situation, and the LUCAS devices can help improve patient outcomes.”

LUCAS Compression devices deliver effective and consistent chest compressions with a minimum of interruptions. Chest compressions are considered to be the most important part of CPR according to the American Heart Association (AHA). CPR is used to bring people who have had a heart attack back to life by keeping blood circulating to the brain and other organs.
The hardest part of doing chest compressions in the field is pushing fast enough and deep enough. The AHA recommends a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute and a depth of approximately two for an adult patient. In the field, while the patient is being moved to the ambulance, maintaining the recommended rate and depth is very challenging. The LUCAS device is able to meet both these criteria during all parts of patient contact.
Several scientific research studies have shown that patients who have a heart attack and need CPR have better outcomes when LUCAS is used. The regular rate and depth that LUCAS offers means that patients have a better chance of walking out of the hospital alive. The LUCAS device can actually stay on the patient all the way through the Catheterization Lab, where lifesaving emergency interventions can be done.
The LUCAS compression device also improves safety for EMS providers. The most dangerous time for EMTs and paramedics is during transport to the hospital. The need to provide lifesaving skills for the patient, such as CPR, often means staff members work in difficult and dangerous positions. The LUCAS device allows all EMS providers to be properly seat belted and safe in the back of the moving ambulance.
HackensackUMC provides primary 911 medical care to more than half of the residents of Bergen County and responded to more than 30,000 requests for help in 2013. In addition, the hospital’s Air Medical Unit provides emergency and inter-hospital transports for patients in New Jersey, New York, and beyond. HackensackUMC emergency medical staff is available 24/7 and are never more than a phone call away.
