On February 14, 2014, at approximately 5:56 am, the Paramus Police Department responded to the” Jewelry Center” located at 327 Route 4 westbound in Paramus in regards to an activation of a burglar alarm. Upon arrival, police observed that unknown actors had smashed in the glass doors located on the west side of the building. Police determined that the suspects had backed a Ford F350 pickup truck through the glass doors, then attached a steel cable to the truck and a safe that had been located near the doors.
The burglars then used the pickup truck to pull the safe out of the building into the parking lot. The suspects used a small backhoe to load the safe into another unknown vehicle that fled the scene. The pickup truck and backhoe were both left at the scene. The pickup truck had been reported stolen earlier in Essex County, while the backhoe was later reported stolen from a Route 17 construction site in Paramus. The victim reported to police that the safe contained up to $250,000 worth of jewelry. The case is under investigation by Paramus Police detectives. At the time of the burglary numerous snowplows were cleaning lots in the area where the crime occurred. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is requested to contact the Paramus Police Department at 201-262-3400 extension 553.
