Quality Distinctions Put Valley’s Cardiac Surgery Program in the Top 2.3 Percent Nationally

Recognized for top quality in bypass, valve surgery, and combined procedure

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has once again recognized The Valley Heart and Vascular Institute’s cardiac surgery program with a three-star rating – its highest designation of quality and clinical excellence. This year, however, the program has been awarded a total of three (3) three-star ratings, an extremely rare distinction that puts Valley in the top 2.3 percent of hospitals nationwide.
This current designation recognizes Valley’s excellence in:

• coronary artery bypass surgery (from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013),
• aortic valve replacement surgery (from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2013),
• a combination of the two procedures (from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013).
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) conferred this designation as part of a comprehensive rating system that compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. Nationwide, less than 15 percent of cardiac surgery programs received a three-star rating for bypass procedures, only 6 percent received a three-star rating for aortic valve replacement, and only 2.4 percent received a three-star rating in both categories. Valley’s current STS designation of three-star ratings for three types of cardiac surgery has been achieved by only 2.3 percent of hospitals.
“Very few cardiac surgery programs have the privilege of receiving a distinctive triple three-star rating conferred by our peers in heart surgery,” says Alex Zapolanski, M.D., Director of Cardiac Surgery at Valley. “This gold standard of quality care and clinical excellence is important to our patients and their families in their decision-making process of where to undergo the highest quality cardiac surgery.”
