Today, Americans for Prosperity responds to Governor Christie’s Fiscal Year 2015 budget address:
"New Jersey is at a crossroads. The state budget has grown over the last four years and again this year with no relief in sight for the taxpayers. While the Governor is making a modest raise in spending this year, primarily to the pension system, it is an increase in spending nonetheless. Members need to decide this year if we are going to pass a budget with tax relief for working families or if we are going to continue handouts to lobbyists in Trenton.
"We need to give real relief to New Jersey residents via a reduction in property taxes or reduction in income tax. Calls from the majority party to raise the income tax, raise the gas tax,and institute a water tax show how out of touch they are with the average New Jerseyan.
"We agree with the Governor we need further pension reform to offset the cost to the taxpayers. The reforms of 2011 were a good start, but only a start. We need to go further and make sure our pension system does not bankrupt our state. Debt, healthcare, and pensions are eating away at the ability for the vast majority of New Jerseyans to live out their American dream in their home state.
"We look forward to working with the Governor and all members to addressing the very real problems with our pension system. At the same time, more needs to be done to stimulate our stagnant economy and to create jobs. Unfortunately, the budget did not offer much in the way of free-market, pro-growth ideas to get our economy moving again.”
