Our Board of Health Director, Judy Migliaccio, arranged for the 2nd Annual Weight Loss Challenge sponsored by the Mayor's Wellness Campaign, The Valley Hospital and Gold's Gym of Paramus. Weekly weigh-ins will be held on specific days at Gold's Gym, 49 E. Midland Avenue or the Board of Health, 1 Jockish Square during the twelve week period. They urge you not only to weigh in, but to attend classes. Registration, required for each class, can be made by calling 201 291 6090. All classes are held at the Municipal Court/Council Chambers in the Borough Hall. Last year Paramus beat their weight loss goal of 500 pounds by over 100 pounds. This year, the 150 registrants hope to beat it by at least 500 pounds.
Mayor Rich LaBarbiera appeared before the assemblage after they had gone through the weigh-ins, measurements and blood pressure screening. He mentioned the above goals and urged the audience to stick to the regimen. Our Mayor is a fitness buff and remains in excellent condition as does MaryAnn, his wife. He likened it to a marathon race stating that it doesn't matter how much you lose, it does matter that you stay until the end and do lose weight. Exercise, a key to losing weight, can be accomplished by taking advantage of a free 2 week pass to Gold's Gym of Paramus as well as specific weight loss exercise classes.
Valley Hospital conducted the Challenge information session after the pre-challenge health preliminaries. Jasalyn DeRyke, Health Educator, explained the program along with a PowerPoint presentation. Suzanne Peiffer, Registered Dietician, spoke to the group afterwards. What was nice about this dynamic duo was that they talked to the registrants on an equal basis. They did not talk down to the people, but spoke at their level. Suzanne explained portion control and described many ways to achieve it.
Let's hope that Paramus can show that they are sincere about losing weight. More to come off in 12 weeks!
