Experts Predict Harsh Spring Allergy Season

-Englewood Hospital Offers Prevention Tips to Relieve Sneezing and Other Symptoms-
(Englewood, NJ, March 25, 2014) – Spring has finally arrived and experts are predicting a harsh allergy season in the Northeast, following the long winter and heavy snowfall. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (EHMC) is offering prevention tips to help keep sneezing and other allergic reactions in check.

“The wet winter we had may certainly make symptoms worse, especially for folks with pollen and mold allergies,” explained Stuart From, MD, Chief of Allergy at EHMC. “However, outdoor conditions don’t necessarily have to spoil the season.”
Seasonal allergy symptoms include itchy eyes, nose and throat, sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose, watery eyes or dark circles under the eyes.
Dr. From says there are a number of precautions allergy sufferers can take to keep those symptoms at bay, in addition to using prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Limit outdoor activities to the evening or when pollen counts are high.
• Leave home and car windows closed to keep pollen out.
• Install and use your air conditioner early to filter the outside air that comes into your home.
• Wash your hair after being outside.
• Avoid mowing lawns or raking leaves, both of which stir up pollen and mold.
• Do not hang sheets or clothes outside to dry.
“These are just a few simple ways to prevent or relieve symptoms as the weather warms up,” said Dr. From. “I also recommend that folks limit outdoor activities to the late afternoon or evening, when pollen counts are lower.”
