American Family Association Says Bill Is Needed in Light of Assault on Religious Freedom
Mississippi legislators yesterday decisively passed a religious freedom bill that could allow state residents to sue over laws they say place a substantial burden on their religious practices.
Supporters of the measure applaud lawmakers and say the bill will protect religious freedoms. Arizona lawmakers passed a similar bill earlier this year, but Gov. Jan Brewer (R) vetoed it.
American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net) worked closely with friends and supporters in Mississippi, including the Christian Action Commission, to pass the bill.
“This measure in Mississippi is timely given the increasing assault on religious liberty in our nation,” said AFA President Tim Wildmon. “Hopefully, after Gov. Bryant signs the bill into law, Mississippi residents will have the means to defend their religious freedoms in the marketplace without fear of repercussions from decisions that are in line with their religious and moral convictions.”
Another provision of the bill, called the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act, will add the words “In God We Trust” to the state flag. The law must now pass through the office of Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R), who has indicated he will likely sign the measure.
According to a statement by Mississippi’s Christian Action Commission, “The freedom for a person to express their religious faith in Mississippi remains under intense attack, but once Gov. Bryant signs this bill our protections will be restored to where they were before being eroded by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1990s.”
