Paramus Police Arrest Two Juveniles Suspected Of Car Theft

The Paramus Police Department announces the arrest of two juvenile males, both 16 yoa, from the City of Passaic for attempted carjacking.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 12:49 pm the Paramus Police Department received a 911 call from the victim requesting help. The victim, a 34 yoa female, from Ridgefield Park NJ, stated that she had just returned to her car located in the south parking lot of the Garden State Plaza, near Best Buy after shopping. The victim was sitting in her car when two young males opened her unlocked car doors and tried to pull her out of the vehicle. One of the suspects grabbed the car keys from her hand. The victim struggled with the suspects. The suspects then fled and ran east through the parking lot towards a residential neighborhood.

At this time, Paramus Officer Kurt Massey who was on Plaza Way, responding to the incident, observed the males fleeing the scene. The two suspects split up and fled into the backyards located on Fairfield Drive. Massey was able to apprehend one of the males in a rear yard of a home on Fairfield Drive. He was assisted by Officer Todd Colaianni and Officer Jonathan Henderson, both of the Paramus Police Department. A perimeter was set up around the neighborhood with the assistance of the Rochelle Park and Maywood Police Departments. A short time later, officers discovered and chased the other suspect in a backyard of Cloverdale Road where he was taken into custody.

The victim declined medical attention. The suspects were transported to Paramus Police Headquarters where they were booked and charged. Both suspects were remanded to the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center in Teterboro, NJ without bail. The defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Both suspects were charged on April 8, 2014, with:
