Shake Shack And Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign Launch Third Annual Great American Shake Sale

Shake Shack Works to End Childhood Hunger in America Through its Largest Cause Marketing Initiative of the Year
Custard for a cause! On Thursday, May 1st, Shake Shack® will kick off its 3rd Annual Great American Shake Sale benefiting Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign.

The Great American Shake Sale is a company-wide cause marketing initiative taking place May 1-31, 2014, at all Shake Shacks—excluding stadiums, airports and international locations. The goal is to raise awareness and funds for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign and help fuel its efforts to end childhood hunger in America.

Throughout the month of May, Shake Shack guests who donate $2 or more to No Kid Hungry will receive a card for a complimentary hand-spun shake—valued at $5—redeemable on their next visit. One hundred percent of donations will benefit No Kid Hungry.

Thanks to an enormous outpouring of support from guests and staff alike, the inaugural Great American Shake Sale in 2012 raised $135,742, and last year’s sale raised $285,862. This year, Shake Shack has upped the goal for the 3rd Annual Great American Shake Sale to $300,000—that’s the equivalent of giving away 150,000 free shakes!

With the assistance of Share Our Strength, Shake Shack is training its team to help educate guests about No Kid Hungry and the issue of childhood hunger. According to the organization, over the course of a year, more than 16 million children in America cannot always count on having enough food to eat every day—that’s one in five children.

Donations to the No Kid Hungry campaign help connect children to the healthy food they need through essential nutrition programs like school breakfast, summer meals, and classes that educate low-income families on how to shop and cook healthy meals at home.

“We launched the Great American Shake Sale two years ago to support an organization and cause that we’re very passionate about,” said Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO. “This initiative allows us to have an open and honest dialogue with our guests and staff about the serious issue of childhood hunger in America. The response has been absolutely incredible and we can’t thank our guests enough for all their support. This year we’re asking our guests to once again make a donation to the No Kid Hungry campaign and help take yet another step toward solving this very real problem.”

The Great American Shake Sale was inspired by Share Our Strength’s Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry™, a national fundraising initiative started in 2003 that encourages people to host bake sales in their communities to support the No Kid Hungry campaign.

In the spirit of the bake sale, Shake Shack is offering seven baked good-inspired frozen custard flavors—one for each day of the week—on its May “Custard Calendar.” Frozen custard flavors include Caramel Praline Cake, Lemon Meringue, Buttery Sugar Cookie, Oatmeal Crème Pie, Banana Bread, Chocolate Cheesecake, and Black & White Cookie. Of course, all flavors can be made into rich and creamy milkshakes.

“When you work with Shake Shack, you don’t just get great food, you get a great team—a combination that makes them unstoppable when it comes to getting behind a cause,” said Debbie Shore, co-founder of Share Our Strength. “Funds raised through the Great American Shake Sale help us connect kids struggling with hunger to hundreds of thousands of meals. We are so proud to be partnering with Shake Shack’s amazing team once again and look forward to continuing our work together to ensure No Kid Hungry becomes a reality.”
