Each year, for the past four years, Fairway Market has held a Fireman's Cookoff with a charitable ending. The winning team gets to pick a charity of their choice and a shopping day is held with part of the proceeds going to the charity. This year, a Paramus Fire company joined the cooking arena to compete against Park Ridge, Ridgewood and Hackensack fire companies.
Brian Doughty led his Paramus Fire Company's cooking endeavor, but had some tough competition from the other cookoff veterans. Fairway introduces a Secret Ingredient which this year was Black Truffle Oil, a pungent flavor enhancer which has to be used judiciously for the hamburgers. Overuse pervades the entire taste and underuse adds very little to the finished product. One of its uses is to drizzle on eggs after they are cooked. Note .. drizzle!
The winning team this year was Ridgewood followed by Hackensack. Defeating the first place Park Ridge company was quite a feat considering that they have won each of the prior years. www.ParamusPost.com was once again a food judge and the offerings were very distinctive.
To add to the celebration, Fairway supplied free hotdogs and hamburgers to the attendees along with music and some of its vendors offering tastes. Vice President of Marketing Jackie Donovan began the cookoff by introducing the companies and the four judges who were comprised of Mel Fabrikant, Terry Krongold of Jersey Bites, , Chef Jesse Jones and Brandon Goldstein of Bergen County Magazine. They judged the hamburgers, chicken cutlets and ribs.
