FAIR LAWN, N.J., Sept. 2, 2014 – September, which is National Cholesterol Education Month, is a good time to learn about food and lifestyle choices that help people of all ages – from seniors to young Americans and children – prevent or manage high cholesterol. Throughout the month, ShopRite of Fair Lawn, an Inserra Supermarkets store, will host a wellness series led by Dana Gaule, R.D., in-store registered dietitian. The following free events are being held for local residents. All programs are open to the public, held at ShopRite of Fair Lawn and do not require advance registration, unless otherwise noted:
Thurs., Sept. 4 – Cook Right for Tonight: Hearty Meals, 4 – 7 p.m. Learn easy-to-incorporate heart-healthy cooking methods for preparing a delicious meal and leave with a step-by-step recipe card.
Sat. & Sun., Sept. 6 & 7 – Gluten and Allergy Free Festival, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Visit your Inserra in-store dietitian team at the Meadowlands Expo Center, 355 Plaza Dr.,
Thurs., Sept. 11 – Free Cholesterol Screening, 4 – 8 p.m. Knowing your numbers is a great first step toward preventing or controlling heart disease, especially since two out of three adults have high cholesterol that puts them at risk for heart disease. Learn some heart-healthy habits too.
Fri., Sept. 12 & 26 – High Fiber Fridays, 9 – 11 a.m. Remain fit and full with fiber. Stop by the Dietitian’s Corner to taste a healthy high-fiber recipe and pick up a recipe card.
Mon., Sept. 15 – Fresh Food Fast: 5 Ingredients, 4 – 7 p.m. Learn how to turn five simple ingredients into a healthy, filling meal. Redefine fast food with this recipe.
Tues, Sept. 16 – Build a Better Salad, 3 – 5 p.m. Learn how to build a creative, nutritious and portable salad for on-the-go back-to-school or brown-bag work lunches.
Thurs., Sept. 18 – Get the Facts on Flax, 9 a.m. – noon. Learn simple tips and tricks for how to incorporate flax into your diet for a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Mon., Sept. 22 – Fruits and Veggies: More Matters Produce Pick, noon – 3 p.m. This month’s produce pick will be the “star” of a new dish prepared by the dietitian.
Wed., Sept. 24 – LiveRight with ShopRite Kids’ Day, 4 – 5 p.m. This make-and-taste cooking class encourages youngsters to create and try simple, healthy snacks. Pre-registration is required.
Tues., Sept. 30 – Healthy Freezer Finds, 1 – 4 p.m. Helpful hints for selecting healthy frozen food items will enhance your brown bag lunch and at-home dinner menus. Sample this month’s frozen food pick.
