Andiamo Restaurant, Haworth NJ Hosts 15th Annual Benefit Motorcycle Run to Benefit Englewood Hospital & Medical Center Foundation and Area Charities
1,200 Riders From Across the U.S. Join in the Spirit of “The Ride” and Doing Good for Others
(Haworth, NJ; June 23, 2014) Andiamo Restaurant will host its 15th Annual Benefit Motorcycle Run on Sunday, September 7th, bringing together over 1,200 riders and thousands of participants in one of the largest fundraisers on wheels in the Garden State. Don Dickstein, owner of Andiamo Restaurant (www.andiamorestaurant.net), developed the Motorcycle Run fundraiser in 2000 to raise funds for the Cresskill Police Department and has since expanded the popular event in terms of size, focus and charity beneficiaries.
This year’s primary recipient is Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s new Cancer Treatment & Wellness Center. The Run will also benefit Haworth Ambulance Corp, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Special Olympics, Andiamo Scholarship to St. Therese School and other local charities. The rain date for the Run is Sunday, September 14th.
Consisting of a stunning 70-mile course led by a specially trained 50-man motorcycle police brigade, the two-hour ride raised over $130,000 in 2013 for several charities. The Run has turned into a motorcycle melting pot, attracting riders from all over New Jersey and from as far as Wisconsin.
Completed in 1 ½ to 2 hours, motorcyclists travel over George Washington Bridge, which closes the entire upper level, and multiple parkways. Riders “own the road” for the duration of the Run, traveling at a range of speeds pending street or parkway travel. Safety is a priority, with meticulous attention to keep the Run free of accidents. Andiamo enlists 50 specially trained police motorcycle escorts to travel with the riders, seamlessly closing and opening bridges, roadways and streets throughout the ride.
“The Andiamo Annual Benefit Motorcycle Run is the only fundraiser that levels the playing field for participants, bringing together millionaire CEOs who ride custom bikes costing hundreds of thousands of dollars alongside 20-year olds riding their first Yamaha,” said Dickstein. “The spirit of the ride is contagious and each year, riders come from distances further and further from New Jersey, traveling thousands of miles just to be a part of the Andiamo Annual Benefit Motorcycle Run, which is a legendary annual journey to do good for the community while having fun with others who love to ride. It takes nine months to pull this event together and a dedicated team of volunteers working day and night to ensure safety, manage logistics, coordinate with law enforcement and sift through dozens of charity applications to determine our annual beneficiaries.”
“Englewood Hospital and Medical Center remains grateful to EHMC Foundation Trustee Don Dickstein, his family and all of our good friends who, for the past 14 years, have worked tirelessly to stage this spectacular Motorcycle Run,” said Warren Geller, EHMC President and CEO. “Thanks to their ongoing generosity, the Medical Center can deliver exceptional clinical care and the highest patient safety to countless families in our community.”
“The logistics involved in organizing the Andiamo Annual Benefit Motorcycle Run and keeping it free of accidents are immense,” said Glenn Toepert, retired Saddle Brook Police Department Chief and 10-year Run volunteer. “We enlist 30-50 New Jersey police precincts to provide escort and safety management. From parking 1,200 motorcycles before the Run begins, to having them depart within a 15 minute window, to re-parking them once the Run is completed in the space of 20 minutes is quite a feat. The police involved in the Run are the best, eight of whom are master training instructors in the area of motorcycle riding for law enforcement. This elite corps provides the rodeo exhibition after the Run at Andiamo and the same officers who train fellow police officers in motorcycle work. The rodeo exhibition allows people to see them do something amazing things while riding, from standing on their seats to riding backwards.”
Riders pay $30 to participate in the Run and passengers pay $15. Following the motorcycle ride, Andiamo hosts a large celebration and block party which attracts upwards of 3,000 attendees. Block party participants who did not travel the course or volunteer pay $10 for unlimited food and entertainment. The Run and after-party take place at Andiamo, located at 23 Hardenburgh Road in Haworth, New Jersey.
