“Hackensack University Health Network is very proud to be a meaningful part of one of the world’s greatest traditions, the annual Rose Parade,” said Robert C. Garrett. “We are also honored to partner with the New Jersey Sharing Network to help save and enhance lives through the gift of organ and tissue donation.”
HackensackUMC is a leader in organ donation in New Jersey. So far this year, HackensackUMC has had six organ donors resulting in 30 lives saved. Another 1,700 lives have been enhanced through the gift of tissue and eye donation.
Mr. Garrett is among thousands of hospital CEOs across the country to dedicate a handwritten message that will be included in the float’s Dedication Rose Garden. For more than a decade, dozens of organizations nationwide have collaborated to enter a Donate Life float in the Rose Parade. Originally envisioned by a lung recipient who wished to thank organ, eye and tissue donors for their gifts of life, the Donate Life Rose Parade Float has grown into a national tradition featuring more than 100 participants each year. This includes riders who have received transplants, walkers who are living kidney donors, and deceased donors memorialized in “Floragraph” portraits which will be integrated into the float’s design.
There are more than 120,000 people in the United States waiting for a life-saving organ transplant; 5,000 reside in New Jersey. The wait time for kidneys, the most needed organ, is five to seven years in our state. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of up to 75 people through the gift of tissue and eye donation.
