HackensackUMC Foundation Receives Donation from Skanska USA to Benefit Multiple Myeloma Fund

HackensackUMC recently received a generous donation of $35,000 from Skanska USA, of Parsippany, NJ.  This contribution represents the proceeds from the fourth annual Dan Wurzburg Memorial Golf Outing, which was held in Vernon, NJ.  Mr. Wurzburg, who passed away in January of 2011, was a patient of David Siegel, M.D., Ph.D., chief, Myeloma Division, John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC.  The donation will benefit the Multiple Myeloma Fund through the HackensackUMC Foundation, which is used to support a number of initiatives, including research.

“While Multiple Myeloma cannot be cured, new treatments continue to be evaluated in research studies, helping many people to live longer, healthier lives,” said Dr. Siegel. “I cannot thank Skanska USA and Dan’s wife, Susan, enough for their continued support the Multiple Myeloma Fund at HackensackUMC.”

Dan Wurzburg worked for Skanska for 19 years and Susan began working for the company in September of 2011. In 2011, Dan’s colleagues renamed the annual golf outing in honor of Dan and, to date, have contributed more than $125,000 to the Multiple Myeloma Fund.

“This golf outing is one of the most wonderful things that I participate in,” said Susan Wurzburg.   “Dan’s colleagues still honor him, love and miss him, as I do.  And their continued support of this Foundation through the golf outing just makes my heart full.”

The John Theurer Cancer Center’s Multiple Myeloma Division is one of only a few facilities in the United States that offers expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer. The division is also one of 13 academic institutions that comprise the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium, a unique research model to accelerate the development of novel multiple myeloma treatments by catalyzing, promoting and facilitating collaborative research between industry and academia.
