Richard Cary was practically born into police work. His father was a member of the Paramus Police Department from 1956 to 1981. It was almost a natural for him to follow in his father’s footsteps, even more natural for his innate ability and talents to achieve the rank of Deputy Chief.

Deputy Chief Cary joined the department in 1974 in the Patrol Division. After seven years he joined the Detective Division and worked his way through the ranks to Sergeant, Lieutenant and Detective Captain. While in that department, he handled all phases of investigative work from Domestic Violence and shoplifting to homicide. One of his more memorable homicide cases was that of a woman who was murdered in town. He vigorously followed every lead and was involved in getting her murderer convicted. By getting the case aired on America’s Most Wanted television program, leads began to filter in. One of them was the key to following the suspect to the state of Washington and then to Montana where his team made the arrest. Not one to have loose ends, he was more recently involved in the same case where a suspect was apprehended by the Bergen County Prosecutors Office. In April of this year, he was one of the team that met the suspect when he was returned to the United States. That segment of the case is still pending. Deputy Chief Cary attended the National Institute of Polygraph Science and administered examinations in Bergen and Passaic Counties for six years. Born and raised in Paramus, ‘Rick’ graduated high school with one of my daughters. He is now married to Barbara and shares with her his 2 daughters + her 2 sons and 3 grandchildren. His hobbies include photography and golf. When I queried the Deputy Chief about our ‘knocker’ problem, he stated that the police department is determined to use all resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute this individual to the full extent of the law. Harassment is not acceptable! It’s good to have people like Deputy Chief Richard J. Cary ready to assist us with our needs.
