Tickets on Sale Now!
General Admission Tickets: $10

(Hawthorne, New Jersey, March 12, 2010) Hawthorne Gospel Church Presents Grammy-nominated Ernie Haase & Signature Sound in concert at Hawthorne Gospel Church Sunday, April 18 at 6pm. Ernie Haase & Signature Sound has broken the traditional mold of gospel quartets. Their unconventional approach to communicating the Good News with groundbreaking originality has blazed a trail that will go down in gospel music history.
The group's founder and leader, Ernie Haase, was a long-time member of the famous Cathedral Quartet, headed by the late George Younce. Ernie's roots are deeply planted in the rich legacy of music that is both meaningful and thoroughly entertaining. After the Cathedrals bid farewell to their five-decade run in the music industry, Ernie's passion for gospel music led him to a new beginning.

EHSS' first DVD release soared to the top of Billboard Magazine's Music Video Chart and simultaneously topped the Contemporary Christian Music Video Chart. That same DVD achieved Gold sales status, and the project's accompanying audio release topped both the CCM and Southern Gospel Audio Charts simultaneously at No. 1.

In 2008, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound won Gospel Music Association Dove Awards for Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year and Southern Gospel Album of the Year for "Get Away Jordan." The "Jordan" album has also been certified Gold. In 2009, they won another Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year Dove Award for "Reason Enough" from their "Dream On" album.
It took 34 games, but the Bergen Community College men’s basketball Bulldogs finally lost. Unfortunately for them, it happened in the semifinal round of the 2010 National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Men’s Basketball Championship in Delhi, N.Y.

Bergen (33-1), the Region XIX champion and No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division III poll, lost 84-79 to Rochester Community & Technical College (Rochester, M.N.) in the tournament’s penultimate game March 12. Tomorrow, March 13, Rochester will play Joliet Junior College (Joliet, I.L.) to determine the national champion. The Bulldogs will play Roxbury Community College (Boston, M.A.) for third place.
Throughout Friday’s contest, Bergen had trouble keeping up with the Yellow Jackets. Rochester led for much of the first period and took a 49-41 lead into halftime. Preseason honorable mention All-American Elgin Brown (of Jersey City) spent a good portion of the half with two fouls, keeping the Bulldogs’ best player off the floor. In his extended absence, Rochester ran its lead to as many as 13. Despite his foul trouble, Brown finished the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks.

The second half was better for Bergen, which cut the lead to two late in the period, but never tied or went ahead. Poor shooting from the foul line (16/30) and three-point line (1/13) sunk the Bulldogs’ chances of a national title.

David West (of Paterson) had a double-double for the second day in a row, notching 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jayvon Beaty (of Hackensack) had 13 rebounds in the loss.

Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu) based in Paramus is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling nearly 17,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip J. Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields.
Social Security to Provide Helpful Health Care Information to Over 3 Million Disability Applicants Each Year

Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced the agency is providing helpful health care information and website links to the more than three million individuals who apply each year for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits. The website links take disability applicants to two U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) websites – www.healthfinder.gov where they will find information and tools to help them better understand and cope with their conditions; and www.healthfinder.gov/rxdrug where they may be able to get help paying for prescription drugs
“This year over three million Americans will apply for disability benefits. Whether they meet the statutory test and qualify for benefits or not, almost all of them are facing difficult economic and medical challenges. One of the advantages of our fully electronic system is that our notices can provide applicants with valuable information provided by HHS that might help them make good choices faster,” Commissioner Astrue said. “Twenty five years ago, I had the experience of filing for disability benefits on behalf of my seriously ill father. It would have been a blessing to have had easy access to this kind of important information.”

The website at www.healthfinder.gov provides detailed information about specific diseases. For example, an applicant with breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, or other diseases can go to the site to gather information about diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, ongoing research, and local resources available to people with those diseases. The website at www.healthfinder.gov/rxdrug links people to the Partnership for Prescription Assistance, which directs people to information on reduced cost or free prescription drugs offered by drug companies, state and local governments, and local organizations.

The helpful health care links also are available on Social Security’s website at www.socialsecurity.gov/applyfordisability.
Presentation Shines Spotlight on Daily Life, Luxuries at Rental Retirement Community
Heritage Pointe of Teaneck residents, along with Saundra Pomerantz, director of community outreach and Donna Zayat, executive director at Heritage Pointe, recently visited a Paramus Sunrise Rotary meeting, highlighting life at the full-service rental retirement community.

Bordered by 46 acres of natural woodlands within the protected Teaneck Creek Conservancy, Heritage Pointe offers spacious private apartments in a four-story building. The community offers distinctive amenities such as housekeeping, 24-hour concierge, fine dining, social and cultural activities and local transportation.
“We at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck want our residents to move into their new home with us and stay with us,” said Pomerantz. “With our alliance of visiting doctors and nurses, our seniors can ‘age in place.’ That way, if necessary, residents can receive care in their apartments, and can avoid moving to an assisted living facility and adjust to a new home and new people all over again.”

Heritage Pointe also eases new resident’s anxiety of transitioning to a new home by recommending realtors to assist with the selling of their house. New residents are also announced after moving in, so seasoned residents can welcome them to the community.

“I began looking for a new home when I became unhappy with the community I was living in,” stated Anita Wolfe, who agreed to be a model in Paramus Sunrise’s Fashion Show on May 21. “When I took a tour of Heritage Pointe, I just knew this was where I would move to.”

The community regularly hosts social and recreational activities including resident selected trips, dance lessons, Tai Chi, movie matinees, trivia challenges, computer tutorials and Spanish classes. In addition, residents who have become friends since moving to Heritage Pointe have started walking groups and regular poker games.

“We enjoy the events the community hosts,” said resident Bill Rini, “but nothing compares to our poker games. We now play three times a week.”

“The food at Heritage Pointe is fantastic,” added resident Gerry Wagner. “The dinners are delicious and it’s great to sit and enjoy them in the dining room with everyone.”

“The community is a unique option compared to other offerings in the area,” stated Paramus Sunrise President Mukesh Malkan. “Our club looks forward to having dinner and visiting Heritage Pointe and their wonderful residents in the future.”

Heritage Pointe of Teaneck is located at 600 Frank W. Burr Blvd. in Teaneck, N.J. For more information about Heritage Pointe call (201) 836-9260 or visit www.RetireAtHeritage.com. The Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club meets on Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. at the IBEW Local 164 Training Center at 65 W. Century Road in Paramus. For more information about the club, visit www.paramussunrise.org.
Awesome Wings

When Gary Spivak mentioned that he wanted to open an eating establishment, he was admonished to have something different. After all, hotdogs, hamburgers and wings are common fare at eating establishments these days. Gary stated that his food would be different! Opening inside venerable Brookside Tavern in Dumont on March 1st, Gary lived up to his statement!

Please click here for menu.
Walking into Brookside Tavern, I met Rich, the owner. Very affable, he led me into Gary's domain, the kitchen, where the two of them posed for a picture. Gary then offered me a hotdog which took just a few minutes to make. Using a special technique on this 10" hotdog, he offered this unusual food standard on a pretzel roll where the dog stuck out 3" on each side. We then had to select between honey mustard, yellow mustard and brown mustard.

Now, if you used ketchup, he had banana ketchup, curry ketchup and tomato ketchup. I used these on the crisp French fries which also had their individual flavor. After all, why have all these savory additives if one doesn't use them. There is a history behind these ketchups that Gary promised to share.

Next came some Brazilian cheese puffs which stood out by themselves. When Gary wasn't looking, I did try some of the ketchups on them to see how the taste differed. Interesting! This was followed by wings in a jerk sauce .. spicy hot, reminded me of India fare.

Just when I was loosening my belt, Terry, the waitress, came out with pineapple milk, lemonade and chocolate toffee cookies. I loosened my belt and dug in .. well worth the effort.

Of course I had to pass up the hamburgers, pizza, chili, Sloppy Joe's and Grilled Cheese sandwiches. I’ll have to go back to 44 E. Madison Avenue to check the rest of the delectable menu. I don’t know about you, but I love exotic foods. Trouble is one has to wait until the kitchen opens up at 4 PM. (Closes at 10)

Q: I don't have a clue about arranging furniture. We bought a condo that has a big window on one side of the main room and French doors on the other side.

Should we put the sofa facing the window or looking out on the patio? I tried it against the wall, but it didn't feel cozy.
A: There's a fine art to making a large space feel cozy. It's all about placing the furniture to relate to human scale — that is, within the reach of normal conversation.

Sister Parish (Mrs. Henry Parish II), the doyenne of design in the early to mid-20th century, was renowned for taming intimidating spaces by breaking them into small, intimate seating areas. Sister's influence was enormous, no surprise, considering her carriage-trade clients (among them, the Astors, Kennedys, Gettys, and — almost — the Duke and Duchess of York, who ultimately realized that it would be bad form to let an American designer do a royals' home).

Parish-style room arrangements have at least two seating pieces close enough for quiet gossip, a table within easy reach and good lighting. "Personal, comfortable, friendly and gay" was Sister's description of a successful room.

The same prescription still applies two generations later. In the pictured room, designer Barclay Butera translates Sister's adjectives into contemporary-speak in the sitting room of his California beach house. Butera angles a sectional sofa partway across the room, backing it with a tall palm to break up the large, open space.

A large cocktail table is conveniently centered, stacked baskets hold a reading lamp, and the picture light provides general illumination. Over all, the darker-painted ceiling encourages the warm attitude of this cool arrangement by one of today's top design talents. For more inspiration, visit www.barclaybutera.com.

Q: We have a contemporary house (our name is Barnard so friends call us "the Pottery Barnards"— ha! ha!), but suddenly we find ourselves attracted to some of the things that weren't so great about midcentury modern, such as wacky lamps with Murano glass bases and wild fabric shades with flowers and fringes. Do we need a design shrink?

A: If you're having fun, don't fret over a little attack of design schizophrenia.

Tastes are supposed to change and grow. As you develop your own personal style, many undiscovered ideas will bubble to the surface. Some will stick. Some are "shtick" — Yiddish for clowning around.

But there's also a word for the kind of decor you seem to be nurturing — "eclectic" — which translates loosely as a combination of different styles but always the best of each. Otherwise, you wind up with mere clutter.

Besides, your kind of wild-and-wacky lamps are making a definite comeback. We saw some of the best at the recent New York International Gift Fair, designed by the sisters-in-law team of Susan and Caryn Kinzig (kinzigdesign.com). The partners have a surprising collection of floor and table lamps with brilliant glass and metal bases as well as uniquely shaped, embroidered and bejeweled shades and pulls — each eccentric enough for the Jetsons and a bright addition to any style room.
Lewis & Clark Presentation at The Atrium

Author and Historian Peter Osborne recently presented to the residents of The Atrium a slide program of his trip following the maps of the Lewis & Clark Expedition of 1803-1806.

He also bought artifacts that would have been used on the trip such as buffalo skin and a hatchet. Peter also bought sweet nut bread, from a recipe of that time period, as a treat after the program.
Beth Stenftennegal, Atrium Activities staff member and Bridge instructor, and also Peter Osbourne's sister, enjoyed the program with all of the residents. Osbourne wrote a book called Lewis and Clark and Me, which is available in digital version at www.pienpack.com.

This program is one of the many cultural and educational programs offered at The Atrium, the independent living residence of The Allendale Community for Mature Living. Other residences on the Allendale campus-of-care include Carlton Court assisted living and the Allendale Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. For more information, please go to www.allendalecommunity.com or call 201-825-0660. The Atrium is located at 85 Harreton Road, off Route 17 South, in Allendale.

One down, two to go.

Despite some tense moments, the Bergen Community College men’s basketball team tipped-off the 2010 National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Men’s Basketball Championship in Delhi, N.Y. with a 97-89 win over Mountain View College (of Dallas, T.X.). With the win, the Bulldogs ran their record to 33-0 and now advance to the tournament’s Final Four. Bergen will play Rochester Community & Technical College (of Rochester, M.N.) Friday, March 12 at 6 p.m. for the right to advance to the national championship game. The title game is Saturday, March 13 at 8 p.m
Bergen pulled away from the Lions in the second half after trading leads midway through the period. Preseason honorable mention All-American Elgin Brown (of Jersey City) carried the Bulldogs through their first round contest, leading all scorers in points (30), rebounds (18) and blocks (3). He also nailed 10 of 11 free throws.

David West (of Paterson) notched a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Asmar Edwards (of Paterson) scored 17 and Derrick Ross (of Newark) chipped in with 15.

Bergen coach Sean Kelly said he was not surprised Mountain View kept the game close.

“There’s going to be tough games every time,” he said. “You have the best teams in the country here. Mountain View did a tremendous job.”

Bergen, the reigning Region XIX champion and No. 1 ranked team in the NJCAA Division III poll, will now face the Rochester Yellow Jackets, who bounced Sullivan County Community College (Loch Sheldrake, N.Y.) from the tournament with a 83-80 win.

Coach Kelly said the Bulldogs will need to “play our game” in order to win.

“In this kind of tournament, you have to do what you do best,” he said. “For us, that means we need to execute and stay together.”
