Will Ferrell, Anjelica Huston, Jennifer Aniston, Ellen Page, Judd Apatow, Mana, Sylvester Stallone, Eric Szmanda, Sarah Silverman part of 30-day call-to-action to free imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient

The Human Rights Action Center and the U.S. Campaign for Burma have joined together to create “Burma: It Can’t Wait,” a first-of-its-kind, 30-day campaign using influential celebrity voices to help build a million-person movement to free Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma.
“We’re witnessing a new age of activism,” said Jack Healey, founder of the Human Rights Action Center and former director of the Peace Corps in Lesotho and Amnesty International USA. “Now more than ever, people have access to, and participate in, a multitude of online options to learn and communicate about causes and charitable giving. With this campaign, we’ve created 30 unique and creative video appeals, designed for the Web, with the goal of inspiring people to take action, once they learn what is happening in Burma. For me, that spark came in 1999, when I had the opportunity to meet Aung San Suu Kyi in Rangoon. I believe this campaign can be the spark that motivates millions of other people to join her cause.”

According to Human Rights Watch, the government of Burma has been responsible for recruiting more child soldiers than any other country in the world, has coordinated programs of ethnic cleansing that rely on rape as a weapon of terror, and practiced policies of forced labor, censorship, and imprisonment of political activists. Another such atrocity committed by this government was the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi, currently the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient. After her political party won more than 82 percent of the seats in parliament in Burma's last election, Burma's military junta placed her under house arrest, where she has remained for 12 of the past 18 years. Because of her peaceful fight for human rights and democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi has been forced from her children and family. The military regime won't allow her family to see her – even preventing her husband from visiting her in the final days of his life. On April 24, the U.S. Senate awarded Aung San Suu Kyi with the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest civilian honor. Suu Kyi is the first person in history to be awarded with this medal while under arrest. Past winners include George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela.

“Just as the world came together twenty years ago to free Nelson Mandela and South Africa, we can do so again for Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma,” said Jeremy Woodrum, co-founder of U.S. Campaign for Burma. “Our goal is to mobilize one million people to join the U.S. Campaign for Burma and become agents for change in Burma.”

"Every now and again, a single person or event captures the imagination and inspiration of the world,” said Will Ferrell in his video, which kicks off the campaign today. “This moment belongs to Burma, and to Aung San Suu Kyi. Please, honor her courage, honor your compassion and let this be the month you join an effort to change the world."

Each day during the month of May, a different vignette will be released from celebrities who are raising their voices to spread awareness about Aung San Suu Kyi. The vignettes will be available through as many video websites as possible and the full campaign will live within Fanista at burmaitcantwait.org. Will Ferrell, Ellen Page, Anjelica Huston, Judd Apatow, Jennifer Aniston, Julie Benz, Rosanna Arquette and many others will help educate and inspire viewers to sign an online petition, virally spread the site to their friends, and take action against these atrocities.

The partnership with Fanista came about through a twenty-year friendship between Healey and Dan Adler, Fanista’s founder and CEO. As Healey said, “I was heading back to D.C. after a second attempt to get this project off the ground. I stopped by to see Dan, who’s been a supporter of the Human Rights Action Center since the day I started the organization. When I told him the problems we were having, he volunteered to step up and underwrite the entire campaign.”

“I’ve been inspired by Jack and his work from the first time I met him, when he was running Amnesty USA. He and Jeremy made me aware of the plight of Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma several years ago,” said Adler. “I was moved by the universality of her story and by her embodiment of what happens when someone truly stands up for what they believe and sacrifices so much to fight for the democratic rights of her nation and the human rights of its people.” As for the fit with Fanista, he continued, “We got behind this campaign because of our belief that the unassailable ideals of Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma could benefit from the voices of celebrities talking about the horrific situation there. We also saw it as a perfect way to use the unique structure of our business model to turn entertainment purchases into pro-social contributions, without costing consumers any extra money,” said Adler. “I am humbled by the opportunity to be a small part of a movement that literally could change the course of a country. “

The vignettes will be available through as many video websites as possible, though the full campaign will live within social shopping site Fanista at burmaitcantwait.org. Bonus footage from video shoots will be available exclusively on Fanista, and personal Fanista profile pages of many of the participating celebrities will be available on the site. Check out www.burmaitcantwait.org and www.fanista.com for more information.

About the Human Rights Action Center

The five primary goals of Human Rights Action Center are campaigning to include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in citizen's passports, supporting growing human rights groups all over the world, creating innovative, forceful, effective solutions to assist victims in protecting themselves, to rightfully restore Aung San Suu Kyi to power in Burma, and to create a fund to get people out of harm's way in exceptional human rights abuse cases. Jack Healey heads the Human Rights Action Center in Washington, DC. Jack has been called “Mr. Human Rights” by U.S. News & World Report. He was named Person of the Week at ABC by Peter Jennings and his music tours of 1986 and 1988 both won ‘tour of the year honors’ by MTV. Jack marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the March on Washington in 1963, pioneered the World Hunger Run with Dick Gregory, and was Director of the Peace Corps Lesotho in Africa for four years. Becoming the executive director of Amnesty International USA in 1981, he made Amnesty International a household name with his pioneering of four successful musical tours including the Conspiracy of Hope and Human Rights Now! tours.

About U.S. Campaign for Burma

The United States Campaign for Burma is a U.S.-based membership organization dedicated to empowering grassroots activists around the world to bring about an end to the military dictatorship in Burma. Through public education, leadership development initiatives, conferences, and advocacy campaigns at local, national and international levels, USCB works to empower Americans and Burmese dissidents-in-exile to promote freedom, democracy, and human rights in Burma and raise awareness about the egregious human rights violations committed by Burma’s military regime.

About Fanista

Social shopping site Fanista (www.fanista.com) is a destination where people who are passionate about entertainment can share their opinions with a community of enthusiasts and champion their favorite artists, stars, music, movies, television shows, and games. CASHEW CHICKEN AND BROCCOLI SALAD

Having some greenery in the evening meal scenery is always acceptable. But suggest a salad as the main course and see how quickly plans are formed to go out afterward for rolled tacos.

Vegetation playing the lead need not be cause for panic, however. Composing a hearty - and healthy - salad worthy of entree status is easy with a few considerations.
"We don't want to deprive ourselves of anything," said DeeDee Kovacevich, an ambassador for Weight Watchers. "With salads, we want to try a lot of variety, and we need to keep it exciting.

"We want an array of all the different food groups," she said. "We want to eat the way we are going to eat the rest of our life, so we need to learn how to make a better selection of what we are putting on our plate."

To keep salads lively, ditch the iceberg lettuce and reach for the romaine and mixed greens. Red bell peppers, cauliflower, shredded carrots, black beans and whole-wheat pastas all add a rainbow of color, she said.

"We only think of salad as being lettuce," Kovacevich said. "Let us open up our thinking. This is going to be a meal."

That does not mean loading on high-fat croutons, exorbitant amounts of nuts and creamy full-fat salad dressing with a lavish hand. Kovacevich suggests when feasting on salad that you look upon your plate as being made up of one half greens and fruit, one quarter lean protein, and one quarter whole grains. A three week alteration project that took three months to open was dedicated by Elizabeth Davis and her staff. Attending the ceremony was County Executive Dennis McNerney who presented Davis with a Certificate of Commendation on the grand opening of the new kitchen. Also present from the County was Edgar M. Freedman, Executive Assistant to the Community Development program.
Davis, in addition to giving a brief history of Bright Side Manor, singled out the people who had given unstintingly of their time. She mentioned her husband, but did not give him an award as she was still giving unstintingly of her time.

Among those getting bricks with their name were: John Fellgraph an architect who donated all of his services, Mary Hirschman who helped make sure there was an oven and a place to prepare meals, the Ridgefield Park Elks Club and Charles H. Parson.

Mentioning some of the travails that had to be overcome, she thanked Hugo for his extreme efforts in making sure that meals cooked off-premise were handled with aplomb and serenity. Elizabeth Davis also thanked the kitchen staff for their efforts as well.

The reason the three week project was prolonged was due to the snags occurred when the installations were supposed to begin. Floors had to be ripped up; equipment refit among other items.

Exciting news took place today. District Governor Joe Laureni and member Tom Wells will get together to get our Charter papers in order so that they can be sent to Rotary International. This would make us the 50th Club in District 7490. Our Gala Chairperson, Valerie Coniglio, has arranged for a night at Sanzari's on June 23rd to celebrate.
Val has called for a committee meeting right after our next regular meeting. In the meantime, member Hemish Kapedia is arranging for the awards. The fascinating part is that he is leaving for five weeks in India with Sushil, his father and also a member. Hemish will be in touch from India where he will live up to his obligations. He promised to return in time for the Gala.

Under the guidance of DG Joe Laureni and our District Liaison, John Mosca, this provisional club voted to adopt the official By-Laws as set by Rotary International. We also discussed our Community Service project, the planting at the Walter Behnke Senior Housing Complex. There is now a sign at the floral garden and unbeknownst to us, the flowers were contributed by Greenland Nurseries.

Sophie Stone reported that our club website is almost completed. Treasurer Gary Spivak gave a financial report and collected some dues. We welcomed visiting Rotarians, Sharon Flynn, Lois & Jerry Horowitz.

Last week during his address to the club, John Mosca remarked that our president was kind of Loosey Goosey. Since we follow our president's actions, I guess we could be dubbed 'The Loosey Goosey Club'!

    JUST FOR HIM

Q: My father-in-law is hinting that he'd like to come live with us, now that he is a widower. We have a small room that had been my husband's den, but I need help in making it work as a bed-sitting room for a 72-year-old man.

A: Think tailored. Think small-scaled furniture and - unless he's expressed a preference for vibrant colors - think calm, warm hues that will be masculine but not necessarily macho (as black could be, for example).
Also take care to include all the comforts of the home he is leaving: good reading lights, inviting chairs in a sitting area that won't make him feel confined to a "bed" room.

The bedroom we show here fits that bill handsomely, with its warm fawn color scheme, gentle geometric fabrics, and seating area that's small but comfortable enough to invite a guest into. More welcoming features include generous reading lamps, on the table and both sides of the bed, tall book shelves for storage, and the surprise of that large reproduction painting that stands in dramatically for a headboard.

The window treatments are also notable: simple pinch-pleated draperies grace the wall while filtering the light and guarding the resident's privacy. (For a host of other good window ideas, check out the book from which we borrowed this photo, "Beautiful Windows," by the editors of Woman's Day Special Interest Publications, Filipacchi Publishing.)

DECORATING IDEAS IN A HURRY

By now a rite of spring all across the country is going on. Local designers in show houses are pulling out all the stops to show the best of their abilities for you to peruse and use - for free - back in your own home.

For example, celebrating its 75th year, Historic Garden Week in Virginia ( www.VAGardenweek.org) opened the doors of some 200 private homes and gardens all across the state last month. Just a couple of take-away ideas from there:

- Nautical charts used to wallpaper a guest bath in an 1883 Italianate cottage in the Hampton Gardens section of Richmond.

- A library completely faux-finished in tortoise shell - shelves, fireplace surround and woodwork - set off by a zebra-patterned rug; on the Seminary Avenue walking tour.

Meanwhile, Kips Bay ( www.kipsbay.org/showhouse.html), the "grandmother" of all designer show houses, opened in New York for its 36th year, this time in an apartment building (totally logical, since most New Yorkers by far live in apartments).

Ideas from professional designers worth taking home:

- Tops of different-sized tin cans overlapped on walls and covering furniture (in Matthew White and Frank Webb's bed-sitting room).

- A child's room with a flight of some 100 paper airplanes zooming across the ceiling and out the window (Jennifer Carpenter's creation).

- Corrugated cardboard, applied floor-to-ceiling and painted a shiny brown to give texture to an ordinary plaster wall (Jeff Lincoln's study).

- An application of reflective stretch vinyl that slicked - and visually raised - the typically low apartment ceiling (in Philip Gorrivan's room).

Rose Bennett Gilbert is the co-author of "Hampton Style" and associate editor of Country Decorating Ideas.
Registered Dietitian Day

The Department of Nutrition and Food Management at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) recently celebrated the first national Registered Dietitian Day, as part of National Nutrition Month®, with a lunch for its 29 Registered Dietitians (RDs). Staff dined on salmon, potato latkes, sautéed vegetables, fresh fruit, and received handmade chocolate boxes that contained RD pins.
The day was created by the American Dietetic Association to increase the awareness of registered dietitians as the indispensable providers of nutrition expertise and to recognize RDs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives by making positive lifestyle changes. The medical center’s RDs are committed to improving the health of our patients and community. More than half of them have a master’s degree and/or Advanced Certification.

“We are delighted to recognize our RDs today – they are there for our patients and for each other, every day,” said Irma A. Newdorf, RD, MPH, assistant director of Nutrition and Food Management at HUMC. Janet O’Toole, RD, MS, of Allendale, clinical nutrition supervisor, presented Irma with flowers from the staff in appreciation for being an excellent role model. Janet and Irma shared positive correspondence received from patients with the healthcare team.

HealthGrades® named HUMC one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for the second consecutive year.

This designation recognizes hospitals that have demonstrated superior clinical quality over a seven-year time period, based upon an analysis of more than 75 million Medicare patient records from 1999-2005. These hospitals have achieved better survival rates and lower complication rates across dozens of medical procedures and diagnoses, from cardiac care to orthopaedic surgery, consistently ranking among the top five percent in the nation for overall clinical outcomes. HUMC is the only healthcare facility in New Jersey, New York, and New England to be named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals. Only one percent of the nation’s hospitals can make this claim.

PHOTO CAPTION:
Pictured from left are: Hackensack University Medical Center healthcare team members Janet O’Toole, RD, MS, of Allendale, clinical nutrition supervisor; Irma A. Newdorf, RD, MPH, assistant director of Nutrition and Food Management; and Paul Kreger, RD, MA, of Bergenfield, chief steward, display the chocolate boxes with pins they presented to the medical center’s RDs.

Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is proud to announce the creation of a Congenital Hand Surgery Service. This service brings together the departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology, and Genetics to offer a team approach for the treatment of children with congenital hand conditions.
“Families whose children have hand deformities are offered the convenience and the expertise of a unique specialty team all on one campus,” said Stephen Colen, M.D., chairman of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at HUMC. “The service will take advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities in The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at the medical center.”
The Congenital Hand Surgery Service is directed by Richard Y. Kim, M.D., director of Hand and Replantation Surgery within the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at HUMC. Dr. Kim currently holds a dual appointment at HUMC – within the departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery.

His training includes congenital hand surgeries at the Boston Children’s Hospital of Harvard University, the Hasbro Children’s Hospital of Brown University, and the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of Columbia University. Dr. Kim also holds an academic appointment at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. “We are really excited about this specialized service. It gives us more opportunities to make a difference in the lives of children,” said Michael Kelly, M.D., chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at HUMC.

“Hand deformities can be disabling for a child. Our service offers families a multidisciplinary team approach, early consultations and the highest quality of care,” said Dr. Kim.

Patients can be evaluated by the various specialties all within the same day. Any testing required will be offered through The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. Surgeries will be performed in dedicated pediatric operating rooms. Follow-up care with the various specialties can also occur within the same day.

“Often times anomalies/deformities present at birth,” said Robert Wallerstein, M.D., chief of Genetics Services at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. “Some of these congenital differences are related to genetics. Our service gives families access to genetic screening, detection, evaluation, and diagnosis.”

“Congenital defects run together with heart disease. When you find one defect, you need to look for more. This may be part of a syndrome or a simple association,” said Robert J. Tozzi, M.D., section chief of Pediatric Cardiology at The Joseph M. Sanzari
Children’s Hospital. “It is our hope to improve the care of these children and their families by offering a specialized, comprehensive service to address all of their medical needs.”

If you would like to make an appointment, please call 201-996-5439.
