In his office we discussed the common disbeliefs about working in a library. The popular version is that a librarian sits back and reads all day long other than when someone checks, out or in, a book or other item. If you have visited our Library, you would be aware of all the help they render. From personal experience, I have asked the Reference Librarians questions many times. I found them eager to help and in most cases I achieved my search problem.
According to Len, it takes education, hard work and skills to be a part of the library staff, at least one that is operated properly. The extended hours have also put a strain on the staff to man the stations properly. After all, over 250,000 people visit the library each year. They have a Children's Program, Youth and Adult Services, Technical staff to order and process the books, Internet Technology ( which they teach for free one on one ) ESL (some of the students have gone on to become citizens) see http://www.paramuspost.com/article.php/20060516153931797:, Finance, Administration and Custodial Maintenance (Where would they be without that?).
We discussed the current proposal to unite the Senior Center with the Library. Parking space is one of the major concerns. Having received a grant and funding from the town, they are in the process of updating their computers. Wireless Internet (RF) will be available throughout the areas. A grant from the Karma Foundation will enable them to procure MP3's for downloading music and/or audio books.
The Paramus Cultural Council Tuesday night presentations have helped people to visit the Library. We joked about charging for the use of the restrooms; they are offered for free! The Library stays open to accommodate the audience.
Quite a bit of funding comes from organizations in town like Friends of the Library, Rotary, the Women’s Club and Len hopes that one day the Elks, the VFW, the Lion’s Club and other organizations will see their way clear to help make our Library a bigger success.
Look to the future when the new computers are put online. Some of the latest technology will be offered including Microsoft Word. You can be sure of friendly help, no matter the problem.
