Infant born in back of Paramus Rig

By JOHN PECORARO Correspondent

It is one of those phone calls you think only happens in the movies.. "My wife is about to have a baby". Well, on Tuesday night, the day after Christmas, in the mist of post holiday traffic, the call came in. While driving from Monsey to Hackensack Hospital, the couple pulled over in Paramus on Route 17 South Bound in the area of the Garden State Parkway. Paramus Police received the cell phone call, and immediately dispatched the Paramus Ambulance Duty Crew. The crew, which consisted of Corp members Sandi Gunderson, Vipin Khare and Shelley Solari, were at the building and responded immediately. The original report was a woman, 9 months pregnant, sixth child, in labor. There was some initial confusion on the location of the van carrying the couple, but the rig arrived within minutes. Deciding immediate transport was necessary, the crew members set up in the back to the rig for the possible delivery.
P.O. Cosentino was enlisted to drive the ambulance to the hospital. Police Dispatcher Chris Saraceno alerted the neighboring towns of the situation, and Paramus P.O. Esposito and P.O. Boccher provided an escort to the hospital. Paramus was aided by Rochelle Park and Lodi Police, who closed the ramps for a speedy trip to the hospital.
Lights and sirens were no match for mother nature, and the baby girl, Sarah, 6 lbs 6 -1/2 oz with an APGAR score of 8-10, made her appearance inside the rig as soon as the ambulance turned onto the hospital property. The baby was delivered, and the cord tied off by the proud EMT's. As a note, this is the first child birth for the members of the crew.
The smiles of the crew and the police officers told the story; mother and child were doing fine, with the help of the Emergency Services from the Borough of Paramus.
