Bergen Student-Athlete Receives National Award

Bergen Community College sophomore ,Juliana Nikolic, of Fair Lawn, was recently presented Bergen Community College’s Outstanding Student-Athlete Award at New Jersey’s 15th annual award luncheon celebrating “National Girls and Women in Sports Day.”

The luncheon—which was held at Seton Hall University—celebrated the academic and athletic accomplishments of 40 female student-athletes from 39 colleges and universities throughout New Jersey.As an outside hitter for Bergen’s nationally ranked women’s volleyball team, Nikolic led the Lady Bulldogs to the Region XIX championship two years in a row. Heralded by the Bergen Record as an “all-around standout,” she earned All-Region XIX Tournament and All-Region XIX regular season team honors. Serving as team captain in 2006, she was instrumental in Bergen capturing the regional championship for the fifth time in the school’s history.

One of Bergen’s most accomplished students academically, Nikolic, a Science major, is maintaining a 3.87 GPA and is on track to graduate this May. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two Year College, she has been named to the honors and dean’s list all three semesters that she has been at Bergen. A 2006 recipient of the $2,000 Khym Foundation Scholarship, Nikolic hopes to continue her studies at a four-year university and aspires to pursue a career in medicine as a cardiologist.

Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling more than 14,000 students in Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degree programs, and certificate programs. More than 10,000 students are enrolled in non-credit, professional courses through the Division of Continuing Education, the Institute for Learning in Retirement, and the Ciarco Learning Center, located at 355 Main Street, Hackensack.
