The National Aphasia Association presented Audrey Holland, honoree at the NAA’s Annual Spring Gala, with the 2007 National Aphasia Advocacy Award on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at the Harvard Club in New York City. The Adler Aphasia Center, located in Maywood, welcomes people with aphasia and their caregivers and offers a place where they can comfortably communicate. Aphasia is a disorder of the brain. It affects a person’s ability to communicate but does not affect their intellect. It can occur as a result of a head trauma, tumor, or in most cases, a stroke.

Dr. Holland, an internationally recognized expert on aphasia has focused much of her career’s research on neurogenic communication disorders, with a special emphasis on aphasia and management of aphasia. To her credit, she has published more than one hundred research articles, textbooks, and clinical tools. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology and is board certified by the Academy of Neurogenic Communication Disorders and Sciences. Dr. Holland received the 1990 Honors of American Speech Language Hearing Association, the Clinical Achievement Award from the Academy of Neurogenic Communication Disorders and Sciences in 1995, the Professional Achievement Award from the Council of Graduate Programs in Communication Sciences & Disorders in 1999, and numerous other prestigious awards and accolades.

The Adler Aphasia Center has welcomed Dr. Holland as an advisor regarding critical issues pertaining to aphasia and a member of the Board of Directors. Her expertise has helped to shape the Center into a unique and one-of-a-kind facility in the United States. Representatives from the Center - staff, members with aphasia, and volunteers, attended the Gala event in New York to support Dr. Holland for her efforts and thanked her for the important work she does on behalf of those touched by Aphasia.
