It's never too late to promote healthy bones

Osteoporosis can leave seniors with thin, brittle bones that may break easily. Bone is a living and growing tissue, and you can take steps to increase the chances that your bones will stay strong. • Eat a well balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
• Make sure that your environment is safe to prevent falls
• Limit alcohol and stop smoking
• Talk to a medical professional about hormonal balance
• Avoid excessive dieting
• Participate in regular exercise

“Healthy Bones” is a 24 week exercise and education program that can help you keep your bones in top shape. It combines weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises to teach you what you need to know to build strong bones, improve posture and promote balance. The “Healthy Bones Program” is free, sponsored by the Paramus Board of Health and open to residents of Paramus. Classes begin in September and are held weekly; pre-registration is necessary.
