McNerney Announces 44th Annual Art In The Park Show and Concert

Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and the County’s Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs invite residents to the 44th Annual Bergen County Art in the Park Show and Concert on Saturday, September 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Van Saun County Park in Paramus. The rain date is Sunday, September 21.“This annual exhibition is a great opportunity for families to gather in one of the county’s most popular parks and enjoy the work of some of North Jersey’s finest artists,” said McNerney. “Viewing these works of art could inspire your artistic tendencies and lead you to submit an entry next year.”

Over 100 adult visual artists will be featured in this exhibition representing the wide scope of cultural diversity found within northern NJ. The show is judged in five categories: Acrylics/Oils, Drawings/Prints/Pastels, Mixed Media, Watercolors, and Photography. This is a juried show with cash prizes for four award recipients including: first place winner - $125; second place winner - $100; third place winner - $75; and Best in Show - $400.

Students from kindergarten through sixth grade will participate in a children’s art exhibition called Kid’s Art in the Park that was arranged through local schools. Winners will be given ribbons and all students will receive a certificate of participation.

In addition to the artwork, residents can expect a concert, which will include the Lauren Hooker Quartet who will perform from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lauren Hooker is a Teaneck resident whose recent CD entitled “Right Where I Belong” was produced by Rufus Reid and Allen Farnham. She received an honorable mention from AllAboutJazz.com for having one of New York’s selected best CDs in 2007. It features jazz standards, as well as Lauren’s original compositions, and credits that include lyrics written by Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Fats Waller, and Mal Waldron.

The Rutgers Bergen County 4-H Program will also hold an open house during the event. Attendees will be able to take part in interactive family fun activities.

“The arts community of Bergen County is delighted to once again offer this annual show and concert free to residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Bergen County Freeholder Julie O’Brien. “This event is the result of coordinated efforts between several county departments, non-profit organizations, and dedicated volunteers. We look forward to welcoming young and old to the 44th Annual Bergen County Art in the Park Show and Concert.”

Van Saun County Park is a wheelchair accessible site. Please contact the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs by September 1 if any additional accommodations are needed. For more information regarding the event call (201) 336-7292.

The Art in the Park Show and Concert is sponsored by the Bergen County Department of Parks’ Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs with funds made possible in part by the NJ State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
